Howell, Hecht and Szilagyi named Week 6 AUS Football Players of the Week


October 19, 2010 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Running back Alonzo Howell and punter / place kicker John Szilagyi of the Mount Allison Mounties along with Saint Mary’s Huskies defensive back Jeff Hecht have been selected as the Atlantic University Sport Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 17th, 2010.

Running back Alonzo Howell of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 17th, 2010. Howell, a first year student from San Diego, CA, led the Mounties to an important 20-7 road victory this past weekend over the Acadia Axemen in Wolfville, NS. Howell rushed the ball 17 times for 103 yards in the win, including a one-yard touchdown run, as the Mounties racked up 237 yards on the ground against the Axemen. Alonzo currently ranks fourth in AUS rushing yardage with 284 yards and his three rushing TD’s is tied for the most in the conference.

Saint Mary’s defensive back Jeff Hecht is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 17th, 2010. Hecht, a third year student-athlete from Edmonton, AB, registered 6.5 tackles, including one for a loss of five yards, and he picked up his first interception of the season in a 41-6 win over the StFX X-Men. Jeff, who was selected to play in the 2010 CIS East West Bowl, returned his third quarter interception 36 yards to the StFX 14-yard line to set up an eventual touchdown and put the Huskies ahead by a score of 38-6. He also added 35 yards on a pair of punt returns.

For the third time this season, Mount Allison punter and place kicker John Szilagyi has been named the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Szilagyi, a first year player from Winnipeg, MB, made two field goals, added two converts and averaged 39.2 yards per punt in Mount Allison’s 20-6 win at Acadia this past weekend. His first quarter field goal from 27 yards opened the scoring for the Mounties and his 27-yard kick midway through the final quarter increased the lead to 13 points over the Axemen. John’s punting was also impressive, with three punts of 50-yards or more and three punts downed inside Acadia’s 20-yard line. Szilagyi currently leads the Atlantic conference in scoring with 54 points, punting average (36.9 yards per punt) and field goals made (14-of-19). His 14 field goals made this are also two shy of the Mount Allison record of 16 set in 2008 by Olivier Eddie.
