The Holland College Hurricanes Football Club recognized the extraordinary contributions of eight players in its Atlantic Football League championship season and paid tribute to an exceptional booster club member at its annual banquet recently.
Linebacker Ben Sherren received the award for Most Improved Player, linebacker Thomas McCabe received the Student Athlete of the Year award, and the APM Construction Services Defensive Player of the Year was middle linebacker and team leader Marcus Dunphy, who completed his playing eligibility this season. For the second year in a row, offensive guard Owen MacWilliams was chosen as Lineman of the Year. Running back Dave Clark received the APM Construction Services Offensive Player of the Year award. Clark, who rushed for 1,498 yards and scored 15 touchdowns this season, was also in his final year of eligibility. Defensive end Ryan Adams, who led the team in tackles, was named Rookie of the Year. Special Teams Player of the Year was Stephen Corcoran, and the award for Most Dedicated Player went to quarterback Nick Hunsley, who passed for almost 1,600 yards and threw 14 touchdown passes and only five interceptions.
The Hilton Trophy for Most Valuable Player was awarded to Demetrius Ferguson, who, in spite of playing with his wrist in a cast this season, amassed 10 touchdowns, seven on kick returns, two on interceptions, and one on the ground. Former UPEI All-Canadian and member of the PEI Football Hall of Fame Mike Lyriotokis presented the trophy to the crowd-pleasing Ferguson.
The team also presented an award to booster club member Gus Cameron, for his support of the team.
The Hurricanes will hold tryouts and minicamps in the spring as they prepare to defend their title in the 2012 season. For more information about the Hurricanes, visit hollandcollege.com/football or facebook.com/HCFootball, or e-mail [email protected].
