Charlottetown, PE – The Holland Hurricanes, last season’s Atlantic Football League Moosehead Cup champions, are holding their training camp this weekend at UPEI. Head coach Andrew Hickey said the public is welcome to attend the morning and afternoon practices.
“We’ve had an excellent recruiting year, and we are bringing in some very promising new players, as well as welcoming back many of our talented veterans,” he said. “As the new head coach, I’m looking forward to building on the excellent foundation that has been laid in the past four years to defend our title and become the only three-time winner of the Moosehead Cup.”
Hickey has added several new coaches to the lineup, including former All-Canadian linebacker Ross Young; Queen’s University Hall of Famer John Thomson; former UPEI All-Canadian Doug Crossman; Zack Nixon, who played four seasons with the Mount Allison Mounties, where he was a starting defensive end; Marc Reid, a former slotback for the Carleton Ravens who attended several CFL training camps; and Paul Walsh, a former CJFL player from British Columbia. The new coaches join returning coaches Ben Parsons, Dennis Sweet and Sean Hickey.
The team will be training throughout the upcoming weekend. Sessions are open to the public from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday; and 9 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The Hurricanes will play a preseason game against the NCAA Div. 3 Maine Maritime Academy Mariners, in Castine, Maine, on September 6. The team’s first game of the season will be played in Saint John against the UNB Saint John Seawolves on September 13. The home-opener is on Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m. against the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers.
