IFAF: 10 more players named to Team World including 8 Canadians (videos)

Gatorade New York Player of the Year selected along with CJFL, AUS and Canada West Rookie of the Year winners

The International Federation of American Football has selected an additional 10 players for the IFAF World Team roster that will face Team USA in USA Football’s International Bowl on Wednesday, February 1 in Austin, Texas.

The state capital will host the third annual game – formerly known as USA vs. The World – when an IFAF World Team of teenage football players led by Canadian head coach GREG MARSHALL takes on American’s Under-19 National Team, composed of current high school seniors (class of 2012). The IFAF World Team roster currently lists 22 players and both teams will field a 50-player roster for the game at The Palace Round Rock ISD Stadium in Austin.

Canadian running back AKEEL LYNCH won the Gatorade New York Player of the Year award as he led the St Francis Red Raiders to an 8-3 record and the Monsignor Martin Association championship this past season. Lynch, who is being coveted by several NCAA Division I football programs, rushed for 2,131 yards and 25 touchdowns on 213 carries and was a First Team All-Conference selection.

“He is one of the best running backs that we’ve ever had at the school and possibly the best that Western New York has ever seen,” said St Francis Head Coach Jerry Smith of Lynch, who broke the Western New York single-season yardage mark. “Especially against the competition we faced, he was tremendous.”

Adding to the IFAF World Team offensive firepower will be BEAU LUMLEY who was named the Canadian Junior Football League and OFC Rookie of the Year and OFC rushing champ, while playing for Windsor AKO. He finished the season with 1,129 rushing yards and nine touchdowns and caught passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns.

Two Canadian defensive linemen have been added to the roster in JACOB LEBLANC of Mount Allison and DARYL WAUD from the University of Western Ontario. LeBlanc won the AUS Rookie if the Year award in 2011 and was a contender for the CIS national rookie of the year award as he posted 30 tackles, including 9 for a loss, and 5 sacks in 2011. Waud helped the Mustangs finish 8-2 and reach the CIS quarterfinals.

Three Canadian offensive linemen have been added to the roster. RYAN DOULL currently plays for Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. JORDAN ARKKO started all 10 games as freshman at the University of Saskatchewan and was named Canada West Rookie of the Year. CHARLES VAILLANCOURT completed his first season with Champlain College Cougars and started at center as he helped the team reach the AAA CEGEP football semi-finals.

Defensive back KADEEM-JOVAN VAILLANCOURT played at Concordia University having previously played for the Ottawa Sooners in the Canadian Junior Football League.

IFAF has added two more American Samoan standouts to the two announced when the first 12 players were added to the roster in November. Tight end DESTINY VAEAO scored a touchdown as his Tafuna High School team finished as runners-up in the 2011 ASHSAA Championship game. Compatriot ROMMEL MAGEO is the defensive leader on the Samoana High School Sharks team and helped his team to the ASHSAA championship in 2009. Both are expected to sign letters of intent with Division I colleges in the United States on the morning of the International Bowl.

In order to be eligible for the IFAF World Team program, players must be nominated by their national federation and are evaluated by the coaching staff based on film review and weekly training log results collected through the IFAF World Team web portal. The selection and announcement of players to both the final roster and Development Team will continue on an ongoing basis until all positions are filled. A limited number of roster spots will be available for players promoted from the Development Team during training camp.

In 2011 the IFAF World Team narrowly lost 21-14 to Team USA at Westlake High School in Austin, and in 2010, the Americans were held scoreless until the final play of the first half before going on to win 17-0 at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The NCAA recognizes USA Football’s International Bowl as a national team competition, meaning the game is not an all-star game. Playing for the United States in the International Bowl is exempt from high school seniors’ two all-star game appearances.
