IFAF: First ever women’s international football game on German soil goes today

Germany looks to avenge 2010 IFAF Women’s World Championship

Bronze Medal Game Defeat in International Ladies Bowl

The first-ever women’s international game of American football to be played on German soil will take place on Sunday, August 28, as Germany hosts Finland in the International Ladies Bowl.

The game, which is being organized by the German American football federation – American Football Verband Deutschland, AFVD – and club team the Munich Cowboys, will kickoff at 2pm (Central European Time) at the Munich Stadium in Germany.

“We want to use the positive momentum of the 2010 IFAF Women’s World Championship to showcase the high level of women’s American football to fans in Germany,” said AFVD President Robert Huber.

The 2010 IFAF Women’s World Championship was held in Stockholm, Sweden, and featured six nations – Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Sweden and United States – competing for the inaugural crown. USA dominated the tournament and was crowned champion, beating Canada 66-0 in the Gold Medal Game.

The AFVD International Ladies Bowl will be a rematch of the IFAF Women’s World Championship Bronze Medal Game, in which Finland took the honors, defeating Germany 26-18. Finland running back Merita Bruun of the Helsinki Roosters showcased her impressive running ability scoring two touchdowns in the Finnish victory, earning her MVP honors.

Germany was down 26-0 at halftime, but nearly forced overtime with stellar second half defensive performance and effective running game led by Nurnberg Hurricane running back Susanne Erdmann. Germany reached Finland’s 37-yard line while trailing by eight points with 43 seconds left in the game, but on fourth and seven the decisive pass fell incomplete allowing Finland’s offense to take a knee and with it the bronze medal.

The International Ladies Bowl game will be only the fourth women’s game played outside of the IFAF Women’s World Championship.

The other three games have been played between Sweden and Finland who developed an annual international friendly game in 2008.

In the first-ever contest, Finland proved their superiority shutting out Sweden 64-0. Finland is currently still undefeated in the annual series, beating their Scandinavian counterparts 36-6 and 36-0 in October 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
