CALGARY – Aaron Ifield certainly has a flair for the dramatic.
Ifield hit a 51-yard field goal with just three seconds on the clock to become the all-time CIS field goal leader, kicking the 71st of his career. And it made it just inches over the crossbar.
It capped a dominant performance by the Calgary Dinos as they finished the 2010 season 6-2 with a 37-5 win over the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.
While the game itself had no bearing on the final standings – the fifth-ranked Dinos finish the season second and will host Regina in a Canada West playoff semi-final next Saturday afternoon – Ifield came into the contest needing one field goal to tie Western Ontario’s Frank Jagas for the all-time national lead and two to take the record outright. He hit on his first attempt from 47 yards late in the second quarter to tie the record of 70 before missing his next two attempts from 35 and 47 yards, setting up the fourth-quarter dramatics.
“I thought it had enough leg, but there was a small stutter so I just tried to keep it on line,” said Ifield, who was mobbed by his teammates following the goal. “I had a lump in my throat after that one miss, but I’m happy the way it finished up. I’m just thankful to my teammates for getting me down there for another chance.”
“I was getting worried there,” laughed Calgary coach Blake Nill after the game. “We had a couple opportunities, but it went right down to the last second. I certainly didn’t want it to be a 51-yarder either – but it’s a tribute to Aaron. He’s been with me from the first game I coached here, and he’s been great for us.”
The 51-yarder tied Ifield’s career longest and is the second-longest in school history. It also established a new school single-season field goal mark of 18.
It was the third time in as many seasons that the Dinos faced the Golden Bears with nothing on the line to close the season, and Calgary earned their sixth win of the season with a solid offensive effort and a stingy defence that allowed the Bears just 219 yards – only 80 of which came through the air.
“As much as you try to motivate them to play, it’s human nature that you know you’re not playing for this week, you’re playing for next week,” said Nill. “But I have to give credit to our guys, I thought they responded well and played hard.”
The Dinos built up a big lead in the opening half thanks to a pair of touchdowns by Matt Walter, one rushing and one receiving. A conceded safety and a 26-yard Hugh O’Neill field goal less than two minutes apart in the second quarter was all the scoring the Bears were able to muster, and Calgary took a 19-5 lead into the half when Ifield hit his first of the day at 14:52 of the second.
Anthony Parker’s 75-yard TD strike from Eric Dzwilewski early in the second half put the game out of reach, and Milos Zivkovic scored his first major of the season on a four-yard run in the fourth.
Parker racked up 122 yards on just five catches to lead all players offensively, while Walter added 79 rushing yards to pace the Dinos. Calgary outgained Alberta by a whopping 542-219 margin on the afternoon.
The Alberta quarterback tandem of former Dino Julian Marchand and Curtis Dell struggled, completing just eight of 23 pass attempts for 80 yards. Shayne Samoil picked up 107 rushing yards on 13 carries for Alberta, while the Bears’ leading receiver was Jess Valleau, with one catch for 29 yards.
Erik Glavic started the game for Calgary, going 9-for-14 for 137 yards and a touchdown. Dzwilewski added 83 yards on 3-for-7 passing – most of which came on that bomb to Parker – before being helped to the sidelines after taking a hit in the backfield.
Both teams get set for the Canada West playoffs next week. Alberta (3-5) will visit the first-place Saskatchewan Huskies (6-2) in one semi-final, while the Dinos (6-2) will host the 5-3 Regina Rams in the other. Kickoff between the Dinos and Rams goes at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, live on Shaw TV and www.qr77.com.
