In the Mind of a Canadian

Whats up everyone,

First blog EVER in my life, so please bare with a possible rough start. Any and all comments are appreciated!

In light of reading previous posts from Lee Barette (in which i agree with everything) about canadian qb’s and the uphill climb they face to make it pro, it’s intrigued me to talk more about that situation, from a qb point of view. I have one day before I hit the field for the National Invite Combine run by Duane Forde. The typical comment I get when people discover my dream to play in the CFL, something along the lines of “Never as a QB, you mean as a reciever.” I’m sure I’m not the only canadian qb to get this drilled into my head either. The fact of the matter is that not only are we deeply behind in money, coaching time, etc, but it is firmly stuck into everyone’s head that no matter what, if your canadian, and you choose to play in the CIS, people automatically rule you out as being capable to compete at the next level. QB’s who come into the league won’t have positive surrounding them, and how do you think this effects their mindset? Right away they become aware that if they ever want to fulfill their dream of playing pro, they will have to switch to another position one day. This only hurts their drive to progress as a QB, and a plateau will be reached. Their dreams seemed to be cut down before they can even build them up. Okay enough about the negatives. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. I know we have talented QB’s in this country, and I know the 3 invited to the E-Camp this year will impress and hopefully someone will take a chance on one of them. We have young talented QB’s as well, and they need to pay no mind to the stereotypes. It’s going to take working harder then anything expectected by any coach. It can be done, and it will be done!! Someone once preached to me (Sam) that the biggest part of being a quarterback is being able to ignore the critics. Mental toughness. Bottom line, if you’re a canadian QB, never let someone tell you what you won’t do. Be proud that your playing in the CIS, and be proud that you’re making a 50 yard throw on wideside outs. Believe in yourself, stay positive, and most importantly WORK HARD. One of us will break through soon!!

So, there’s just a little glimpse of where my head is at going into the combine tommorow. Im excited to get this opportunity in my 3rd year, and I will make the most of what I get… A little nervous, but nerves never hurt anyone. It’s also going to be very cool to see other players across the league and what they can do. Can’t wait!!! Gotta go to class now!

Hopefully this first post interests a few people. Again, any and all comments are appreciated!

Until next time,

Brad
