The entire season has been building towards the 2010 Subway Bowl and only two teams have the honour playing for the Provincial Championship. Last Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium the answer to the question of who would be playing at Empire Stadium in the Subway Bowl and they both did so while sending a statement.
First on the docket was the Terry Fox Ravens taking on their Coquitlam rivals Centennial Centaurs who had been one of the hottest teams in the month of November. In the meeting between the two rivals in the βCoquitlam Civil Warβ at the end of October saw the Ravens beat the Centaurs by 30. But the Centaurs had won three in a roll following the loss to the Ravens and looked impressive doing it knocking off Lord Tweedsmuir, Mt. Douglas and Kelowna.
However, as hot as Centennial might have been going into the game the Ravens were that much hotter. The Ravens made their 46-13 win on Saturday night look easy. Their offence was so effective that they had to punt the ball only twice in the entire game. Four different Ravens scored touchdowns with Jarred Soll scoring three times. In the night cap the Vancouver College Fighting Irish took on the WJ Mouat Hawks. The Hawks were the number one team ranked in the province for the vast majority of the season. The Irish lost only once all season, to Terry Fox, including an impressive 11 game winning streak where they outscored their opposition 356-63.
After the Irish scored first, a touchdown strike from Jeff Tichelman to Charlie Thorpe, the Hawks scored their only points on a field goal by Tanner Strauss. After that it was essentially all Irish on both sides of the ball. The defence was stifling scoring on an interception by Adam Konar and giving up fewer than a dozen first downs following the score. The offence rolled ahead as well scoring twice.
