It’s Hyacks Homecoming time tonight

There will be a special atmosphere in the air tonight in at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster, British Columbia.

It’s Homecoming time for the New Westminster Hyacks of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BSHSFA).

The Hyacks will face the Centennial Centaurs at 7:30pm and there has been a such build up surrounding this big game the mayors of both cities the teams play out have gotten into a friendly wager.

“This is as close as you get to a ‘U.S. type’ high school Friday night lights game,” said Hyacks head coach Farhan Lalji. Β “Even though New West is 20 minutes from Vancouver, and we are suburb, this is a great community that rallies around events like this.”

Lalji credits the volunteers and sponsors that make the evening, in its 11 years, such a special event. Β “Our major sponsor Key West Ford has really stepped up and added some special components to the event. Β As well, we have over 60 volunteers that we cannot thank enough.”

Both CBC & CTV will have a presence at the game and the game will be LIVE STREAMED with a special 2 camera shoot starting at 7pm local time.

The host team is coming on the heels of 35-20 win in Washington over Seaquam High School.Β  In the game, the Hyacks racked up over 400 offensive yards.

The key players that will figure prominently for the Hyacks include quarterback Tommy Robertson, offensive/defensive lineman Harper Sherman, running back Angelo Tanjuaqio, fullback/linebacker Julian Ramirez, wide receiver/defensive back Tristan Sands, offensive/defensive lineman Billy Collins, offensive lineman/linebacker Jonathan Tomalty as well as outside linebackers Bogdan Pavel and James Nicolas.

Aside from the game, there are many activities planned around Hyacks Homecoming that centres on interaction among families and the community.Β  Those activities include pregame Alumni Touch Football Tournament, game ball being thrown in by a parachute by the British Columbia Skydiving Team, Royal Regiment Flag Party and postgame fireworks.Β  Moreover, there will be a pregame party in the stadium which will include a band, face-painting, Family fun-zone, BBQ and a DJ.Β  Finally, BC Lions players will be present on site to sign autographs.

As for the varsity football team, the Hyacks begin provincial varsity β€˜AAA’ regular season action on Friday September 20th, 2013 when they are on the road to face CFC #1 Mount Douglas Rams. Β Kickoff is 2:30PM PST.
