Jr. Mustang running back to join U Sports Warriors

Waterloo picks up Ontario commit.

This Junior Mustang will be exchanging his horseshoes for a Warrior helmet after Derek Aubin, a running back from Catholic Central Secondary School, committed to Waterloo on Oct. 23.

His new university may not be in his hometown of London, Ontario, but Aubin will still be in same province when he joins the Warriors in 2017. It was the magnetism of the campus that helped the 5’11, 195lbs football player chose Waterloo.

“Ever since my first time visiting there, I always looked forward to coming back again. I felt at home and comfortable immediately. It was clear from the start it was the best option for me both football and academic wise,” he said.

While the Warriors are in a bit of a rebuilding mode, Aubin is looking forward to the chance to be apart of a young team. “It is going to consistently get better and better. The opportunity to be apart of a building program that allows young players to contribute right away made Waterloo the best decision I could have made,” he said.

He added that, “I love the coaching staff. They all know what they want to achieve. No matter how many bumps they encounter, they never point fingers. They always have a hungry attitude. They want success for the team and for their players more than any coaches I have seen.”

Aubin is also pleased with his encounters with Head Coach Bertioa, who he said is a great coach and a great guy to be around. “Anybody who has had the pleasure of meeting him will tell you the same. It was very easy for me to put my trust in him and what he is trying to create at Waterloo,” he said.

When he gets to Waterloo, the young football player said he is interested in going into the recreation and sports business program. “Their co-op program is unrivalled and to leave with a degree from a great school and tons of job experience is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he said.

Aubin has been playing football for five years as a member of the Catholic Central Crusaders (Thames Valley Regional Athletics) and the London Junior Mustangs (Ontario Varsity Football League). He has won a provincial championship with the Mustangs and a city championship and Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association championship with the Crusaders last season. He was named Offensive Player of the Year last season as well.
