Junior Gryphons QB commits to Guelph

Guelph welcomed their first CIS commit of the 2017 class in September.

Alex Douglas, a quarterback from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, won’t have to change his uniform much; the former Guelph Junior Gryphon (Ontario Football Conference), is now a member of the University of Guelph Gryphons.

Douglas, who comes from Cambridge, Ontario, signed his letter of intent in September, solidifying his place on the team. “University of Guelph offers a great learning atmosphere, everything is on campus, feeling of community as soon as you arrive,” he said of his new school.

During his time with the Junior Gryphons, Douglas got to know several of the current players on the Gryphons over the past three years. “U of G has a great football program, some injuries have held us back, but know the players here are never satisfied. Its all about the team,” he said.

The young quarterback is already familiar with the offensive coordinator of Guelph, Coach Todd. “He has worked countless hours with me in the film room to help me develop as a quarterback over the last few years,” Douglas said.

He added that Coach Todd has helped him elevate his game so he could compete for a spot on Team Ontario. He also said he is excited to learn from Head Coach McNeil and the rest of the coaching staff. The young football player is also interested in criminology and he would like to apply to either the OPP or RCMP after university.

Douglas is 6’3, 195lbs and has played two years for the Brampton Bulldogs (Ontario Varsity Football League) and three seasons with the Junior Gryphons. He is also a member of the St. Benedict Saints (Waterloo Country Secondary Schools Athletics Association). Before that, he played nine years of organized football in the Canadian Minor Football Association. He has won an OVFL championship and was voted as an all-star at my position in the Southwestern Ontario Football Association of Leagues. He also played in the Turkey Shoot Out Bowl in North Carolina.

In grade eight, he played his first International Bowl with Team Canada in Florida. As a starting quarterback under Coach Mills, he won silver in Quebec as part of U18 Team Ontario. He also played with Team Ontario in the U17 and U18 International Bowls, one of which was in Arlington, Texas.

“I was thrilled to play in the house Jerry built, nothing tops Cowboys Stadium,” Douglas said of his experience down south.

“I have been fortunate to have many individual awards over the last nine years of football and basketball, played and travel for high school for both sports. I love both games, but there came a point when I had to make a decision on which one to pursue at the next level,” Douglas said.

He added that after four years of trying, he and his teammates finally won a Division 8 Basketball Championship. “After being a finalist for three years, it was nice to finally bring home the trophy. This year we are going after the OFFSA trophy.”

As for football, he said “I’m looking forward to finishing my high school football season with the St. Benedict Saints on a winning note. It’s a great program. Coach Vale has been my head coach for the past 5 years. He is a great leader and an example to all of us who have had the privilege to play for him.”
