Junior Scarborough Thunder footballers complete perfect regular season

Scarborough’s three Thunder football teams have all qualified for their respective Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) post seasons, and two of them will commence playoff action this weekend.

First to this weekend’s games.
The oldest Thunder team (varsity) has a bye by virtue of an undefeated 8-0 season.
But both the junior and peewee Thunder will see first-round action.
JUNIOR
The junior Thunder finish fifth in their conference with a 5-3 record and that means they will have to go on the road. The good news is they only have to travel to Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke on Saturday, July 31, 6:30 p.m. to take on the Etobicoke Eagles who also finished with a 5-3 record (but ended up with one more point as one of their losses was in overtime).
Of note, here is that highly touted local running back Jayde Rowe, who suited up for Agincourt Collegiate last fall, ended the regular season as the top rusher in terms of average carry, earning 8.8 yards per carry. He totalled 1,060 yards on 121 carries (and was second in terms of total yards).
Etobicoke, on the other hand, sports receiver Nathaniel Pino of Weston Collegiate who was tied for first in terms of average receptions (26.2 yards per catch) and second in terms of total yards (576 yards on 22 catches).
PEEWEE
The peewee Thunder finished third in their conference with a 6-2 record and host Brampton (4-4, including one overtime loss) on Sunday, Aug. 1, noon, at Birchmount Stadium.
The Thunder boasted a top-five performer in receiver Dejuan Martin, second in total yards with 363 on 18 receptions.
VARSITY
The Varsity Thunder team are showing their OVFL playoff championship last year was no flash in the pan after missing the playoffs the previous year.
They capped their outstanding 8-0 season by winning last weekend’s battle of undefeated teams, 27-25 over the host Cumberland Panthers in Ottawa.
As a result, the Varsity Thunder earns a bye week this weekend and will open at home at Birchmount Stadium the following weekend.
