The Junior Varsity Wildcats and rec/punter Jack Vernon proved just that as Vernon kicked a last second punt through the Thunder end zone to give the Cats a thrilling 21-20 win.
Metro Toronto were the clear underdogs to the perennial powerhouse Toronto Thunder, but pulled out the upset victory in Cinderella type fashion.
With the lead changing hands five times, the game turned out to electrifying from start to finish and jam-packed with a number of outstanding plays. Both teams still showed signs of early season rust with a number of turnovers and penalties.
Coach Babin knows that his team must play sharper next week against the Myers Riders to have a chance to win. “We will have to cut down on execution mistakes and penalties if we are to compete with some of the great teams we have on our schedule“ Babin expressed.
Week 1 defensive MVP Deshawn Stevens had another stellar performance in week 2. For the second straight game, Stevens put the team on his back with two interceptions and a number of solo tackles. Stevens has now solidified his reputation as one of the premier linebackers and overall defensive players in the OVFL.
Quarterback Greg Dosset and wide out Trivel Pinto were once again exceptional in week 2. Pinto made several big plays through the air, while Dosset had two QB sneaks for touchdowns.
Quinn Charles, coming off a six reception game in week 1, had the key play of the drive which set up the tying score. He made a spectacular catch at the one yard line leading to Dosset`s TD sneak.
The Junior Varsity Metro Toronto Wildcats know they must step their game up next week in the home opener against league standouts, the Myers Riders at Esther Shiner Stadium. Kickoff is at 11:00am.
