Kanya named CW defensive player of the week

CANADA WEST – Fifth-year linebacker Nathan Kanya has been named the Canada West football defensive player of the week.

The Hamilton, Ont., native continued his impressive start to the 2010 season, picking up nine tackles including seven solo, four tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks as the UBC Thunderbirds upset the no. 2 Saskatchewan Huskies 31-12 last Friday in Saskatoon. The win was UBC’s first victory over Saskatchewan since a 44-21 result on September 30, 2000.

Kanya’s effort led a UBC defence that held the high-powered Huskies to only 272 yards of total offence. He now sits tied for first in the Canada West with 17 tackles and ranks first in the conference with 5.5 tackles for a loss.

Also earning conference recognition were a pair of Calgary Dinos in rookie QB Eric Dzilewski (offence) and WR Nathan Coehoorn (special teams).

UBC (1-1) welcomes the Manitoba Bisons (0-2) to Thunderbird Stadium this Saturday for their Homecoming game. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with a tailgate party beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the stadium parking lot.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
