Knox returns to McMaster

According to the Hamilton Spectator, Greg Knox has returned to familiar territory.

Knox has once again joined the McMaster Marauders as Defensive Coordinator.  He served in the same position for seven years until leaving the team to assume the similar position with University of Toronto Blues less than a year ago (May 21st, 2013).

In the Spectator article by Ken Peters,  it appears that Marauders Head Coach Stefan Ptaszek was faced with a difficult choice as both Knox and incumbent Ken Eiben both wanted the position.

After much speculation, Ptaszek decided upon Knox, last week.

On March 18th, Knox resigned from the full-time Defensive Coordinator position with the Varsity Blues only staying 10 months as Defensive Coordinator.

In the Spectator article, Ptaszek offered that Knox left the Varsity Blues position due to time commitments and family reasons.   As the Marauders position is part-time, it was better situation for Knox to return back to the team.  Knox contacted the team to come back for the 2014 OUA season.

A two-time Grey Cup champion as a member of the Calgary Stampeders, Knox helped guide McMaster to the university’s first Vanier Cup title in 2011 – his second CIS banner after winning one as a player with the Laurier Golden Hawks (1991). During his playing career with the Calgary Stampeders (1992-99), Knox was a captain for several seasons, CFL All-Star in 1994 and Tom Pate “Man” of the Year Award nominee for outstanding sportsmanship, dedication and contribution to the league. After winning his second Grey Cup in 1998, Knox retired but stayed active throughout the league.

Knox was contacted last month by CFC for comment on his departure from the Varsity Blues but he declined comment at that time.

Kevin Eiben

As for Eiben, the Marauders hired him to replace Knox back on July 8th, 2013.  During Eiben’s stint, he guided the defensive unit in setting a team record as they stopped opposing teams from scoring a touchdown for 19 consecutive quarters during the 2013 OUA season. The unit was ranked in the top three of the OUA conference for turnovers, points allowed and yards allowed.

Eiben moved into the CIS coaching ranks after completing a stellar career as a linebacker in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Drafted by Toronto out of Bucknell University in 2001, Eiben was named to the East Division All-Star team five times and was a three-time All-CFL selection. He was a member of Toronto’s Grey Cup championship winning squad in 2004.

After playing the 2012 season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Eiben announced his retirement as an active player and assumed a front office position with the Ti-Cats as the coordinator of premium seat marketing for the new Hamilton Stadium.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
