WINDSOR – OUA all-star Austin Kennedy tied his own Lancers record with six touchdown passes, as the Windsor Lancers men’s football team flexed its offensive muscle at Alumni Field on Sunday afternoon, earning a 78-11 victory over the Waterloo Warriors to open the 2013 season.
The fourth year pivot was 24-of-28 on the day, tallying 335 passing yards over three quarters of play before resting in the fourth with the game well in hand. For the second year in a row, Kennedy (Windsor) tossed six passing majors on opening day while conceding no picks to Waterloo’s defence, and was also Windsor’s second leading rusher, totalling 108 yards on 15 attempts.
Evan Pszczonak grabbed three touchdown receptions, which also ties a Lancers single-game record, and totalled six catches for 102 yards. The Amherstburg, Ont. native was complimented by hometown product Beau Lumley, who picked up 87 yards on seven catches in his first CIS contest.Ā Fellow Amherstburg native also Nathan O’Halloran caught two passes for majors.
The Lancers also brought a dominant ground game on Sunday, as veteran running back Mitch Dender (Amherstburg) picked up 111 yards on 13 rushes, while rookie Nigel Applewhaite (Hamilton) made good use of his first-ever start in the Blue and Gold, running the ball nine times for 88 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Windsor’s 78 points breaks a team record for most points scored in a single game. With the win, the Lancers avenged a 48-29 loss to the Warriors in their final conference match last season, and move to 1-0 on the year.
The Lancers will hit the field next on Labour Day Monday, September 2 when they head to Guelph to battle the Gryphons. The game is set for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
Windsor is back at home on Saturday, September 14 when they welcome the Carleton Ravens to Alumni Field for 1:00 p.m. kick-off. The following weekend is the University of Windsor’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, and as part of the festivities the Lancers will host the Toronto Varsity Blues on September 21 at 7:00 p.m.
