Lancers set to battle Golden Hawks for a spot in the post season

The University of Windsor Lancers football program returns home this weekend to close out their 2010 season against the 3-4 Laurier Golden Hawks. With a win on Saturday the Lancers will seal a trip to the post season for the first time since 2006.

The Lancers are coming off of a 41-14 loss to the Guelph Gryphons last week. Windsor quarterback Austin Kennedy finished 13 of 22 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown.

Kennedy also led the team in rushing with 44 yards. Greg Orsini also saw action at quarterback in the final quarter going 6 of 12 for 62 yards.

However, the Lancers did not have an answer for Guelph’s offence, as quarterback Chris Rossetti had a big game for the home team as he completed 20 of 28 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns. Nick Fitzgibbon ran for 113 yards on 20 carries for Guelph.

The Lancers will have to find away to move the ball down the field effectively against the second highest ranked defence in the OUA. The Golden Hawks success this season has hinged on their veteran laden defence which on average only allows 312 yards per game.

If the Lancers are to find success against the Golden Hawks they will need make smart choices with the ball and establish their running game early in order to free up their key deep threats in Jordan Brescacin and Cory Fernandes.

Brescacin is having a career season as he is ranked 5th amongst receivers in the OUA, with 476 yards this season, and will be counted on to be a key contributor on Saturday.

Don’t miss the do or die game, kickoff is set for 1pm at Alumni Field. Tickets for the events are $8 for adults, $5 for youth/senior, $12 for gold reserved seating and can be purchased at the gate.

As the final regular season game, the Lancers will also honour their graduating seniors prior to kick-off.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
