Despite an action-packed fourth quarter, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team came up short, falling 26-17 to the Windsor Lancers in front of a near-capacity crowd at Varsity Centre.
In what turned out to be an exciting affair down the stretch, a record-setting 4,111 fans packed the stadium for U of T’s annual Frosh Night where first-year students from all faculties and colleges came together to catch this year’s home opener.
Windsor kicker Robert Eeuwes proved to be the main event, accounting for all but nine Lancer points. The Burlington, Ont., native kicked five field goals of 20, 28, 30, 42 and 44 yards and tacked on 410 punting yards in the win.
Down 23-0 heading into the final frame, fourth-year quarterback Jordan Scheltgen of Surrey, B.C., turned it up a notch with 159 passing yards and two touchdowns to keep the game within reach.
Scheltgen found first-year standout Alex Pierzchalski (London, Ont.) in the end zone for a beautiful 28-yard touchdown, his first as a Varsity Blue, just one minute into the quarter.
Defensive end Todd Inkila came through with a huge blocked punt midway through the frame, however the Blues were unsuccessful in converting again until Scheltgen connected a 55-yard pass with fourth-year linebacker-turned-receiver Rolli Adenmosun with just over two minutes remaining.
Fourth-year receiver Cory Fernandes opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Sam Malian on the Lancers first drive of the game.
Malian was 24-of-34 for 254 yards and one touchdown, while Jordan Brescacin ended the night with 13 catches for 118 yards.
Scheltgen ended the night with 203 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Adenmosun, the Varsity Blues player of the game, made three receptions for 74 yards. Third-year linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza had a game-high six solo tackles in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday when they travel to Waterloo, Ont. to take on the No. 6 Laurier Golden Hawks. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
