Dream comes true

William Latu

Richmond standout becomes first commit for CWUAA’s 2014 class

It is a dream realized.

As William Latu committed to the UBC Thunderbirds for the 2014 CWUAA season, he couldn’t have asked for and scripted a better gridiron chapter like this one.

“UBC is my dream school, and my mom, my Grandma, both of my aunts, my cousins and my uncle went there, so it was an easy choice,” explained William of his decision.  “Several Vancouver College alumni are playing at UBC, and have expressed their enjoyment with the program.”

“The entire coaching staff and the players I visited were all kind and determined to succeed, and the facilities were amazing. It just felt like the right fit for me. The campus is magnificent, it’s close to home, and I know many people there playing football and basketball (my former sport).”

The 6’6, 320 pound standout who is a native of Long Beach, California but has lived in Richmond, British Columbia and owns dual citizenship, joins the Thunderbirds after suiting up for the Vancouver College Fighting Irish of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA).During his time with the team, he has played at the defensive tackle and jumbo tight end positions.  In 2013, Latu registered 36 tackles and recorded two sacks for the Fighting Irish.  When he comes to the Thunderbirds, he will play on the team’s offensive line.

“We are extremely excited to have Will join our program,” commented Thunderbirds Head Coach Shawn Olson of the newest Thunderbird.  “Although he has not played a ton of football, he caught my attention in his first spring camp at Vancouver College. “

“There are not many players that are 6’6, 320 pounds who move as well as Will does.  He is a great student, high character, consistently works hard, has natural athleticism and spent his one year of football in a fantastic program at Vancouver College; we just need to refine the football side of things.  I believe he has a very high ceiling as a student athlete and I can’t wait to work with him over the next five years.”
