Laval player gets 3 game suspension following RSEQ review on dangerous hit

The RSEQ makes its decision following the incident during the match of the Dunsmore Cup final involving the Carabins of the University of Montreal and the Rouge et Or of Laval University.

Montreal, November 15, 2017 – Following a request to review an incident that occurred in the final moments of the first half of the Dunsmore Cup final match involving the Carabins of the University of Montreal and the Rouge et Or Laval University, the RSEQ (Quebec Student Sport Network) makes its decision as to the disciplinary measures to be taken in response to the request of the Carabins of the University of Montreal.

On the one hand, it should be remembered that the Carabins of the University of Montreal alleged, in a request for review filed Monday afternoon, that on one occasion during the match of November 11, a student-athlete from the Rouge et Or Laval University’s Kevin McGee (# 24) is said to have committed a dangerous tackle in the head against Khalil Kerr (# 6) of the Carabins of the University of Montreal. Given the seriousness of the request, the network analyzed all the supporting documents of the two parties concerned in order to make an informed decision.

Thus, after consulting the complementary video and written reports concerning student-athletes Kevin McGee (# 24) of the Rouge et Or of Laval University and Khalil Kerr (# 6) of the Carabins of the University of Montreal, the RSEQ’s university football league commissioner indicates that the University of Montreal’s application for revision has been retained. Indeed, in the sequence involving student-athletes Kevin McGee (# 24) and Khalil Kerr (# 6), the video review and the consultations provided give the Commissioner sufficient latitude to conclude that the student-athlete’s tack McGee was unlawful in keeping with Rule 7 (Offenses and Penalties) – Section 2 (Excessive Rudeness) and Section 3 (Roughing) – Article 5 (Other Excessive Roughness) and Article 16 (Player in Vulnerable Position) of the Football Rules Canadian amateur.

This gesture is categorized as excessive roughness leading to disqualification, therefore a suspension part. In addition, the action was directed directly at the head and considered to be an attempt at injury. In accordance with section 19.5.4 of the RSEQ University Sector Regulations, this entails a suspension portion, and since this action is a recurrence following the incident of September 28th involving the half-inserted University Stingers Concordia James Tyrell, that entails an additional part of suspension. In total, this represents a three game suspension for UniversitΓ© Laval Laval Rouge et Or student-athlete Kevin McGee (# 24). This sanction will be applicable from the Mitchell Cup game on November 18 in accordance with U Sports Regulation 90.60.5A.

Β “The RSEQ is concerned about the safety and health of all student-athletes in its network. Despite this concern, the regulations on football field safety and the training of football referees are the responsibility of the Football Quebec Federation under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sport (MELS)”. – Gustave Roel, President and CEO of RSEQ
