Laval responds to Norzil’s suspension

Laval – Laval University has taken note of the decision of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) regarding former Rouge et Or player Matthew Norzil.

On Friday, the former Laval receiver was sanctioned by the CCES for use of banned substances. He has waived his right to a hearing and is therefore suspended for a period of four years. Laval accepts this decision and have offered their full cooperation throughout the process.

Director Christian Gagnon stressed that Norzil was no longer part of the team since last November, which was the end of the season. He was also not a student at Laval University at the time of the allegations.

“As an organization, we are doing everything necessary to ensure that our student athletes are sensitive to the issue of doping,” commented Gagnon. Β “But from the moment when they fly on their own, it is difficult to exercise tight control and be strict over them.”

He pointed out that the Rouge et Or student-athletes conform to the CCES’ expectations each year.

“They must all have followed the CCES online education to be able to align with the Rouge et Or,” stressed Gagnon. Β “In addition, coaches, medical staff and physical trainers regularly remind student athletes harms of doping.”

“We will continue to work hard at it and be proactive in the fight against doping.”
