LB Beals making waves between the lines

Nicholas Beals has been playing the game for all of two years, but the youngster has burst onto the Nova Scotia high school football scene.

The linebacker from Halifax, a star with the Dartmouth Big Green of the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation (NSSAF) is extremely passionate about the game, and you can see it in the way he describes playing his position.

“[I love] the feeling you get when you make a tackle and get up with the thought of ‘I’m doing it again!” he said.

Beals has also received some reps as a defensive end in his two years at Dartmouth.

Although he has yet to truly experience recruitment being a 2018 grad, Beals sees the next 12 months as imperative for him in garnering interest from U Sports schools. In terms of where he would like to end up, his top three choices include a trio of local AUS programs, those of St. FX, Dalhousie and St. Mary’s.

The 5’8, 180-pounder expects that there will be somewhat of a transition period from high school to the University level, but is confident that it’s nothing he can’t handle.

“I think that it’ll take a bit of time,” he said of the adjustment. “But surely enough I’ll get it.”

Irrespective of the locale, the Grade 11 student, who did not set on a pair of pads until his first year of high school, wants to focus on academics as well as football, and “find a passion in something I’d like to spend my life doing.”

Beals has one special person he admires and tries to impress every time he steps between the hash marks.

As of recently my brother [Travis] has joined the Military and I try to think about what I can do to make him proud,” he said. “Knowing that he has to go through the rough himself tells me that I can do it too.

My brother is someone I look up to unconditionally. He’s always been with me through thick and thin.”

And, as is usually the case for players, on the field, it is his coaches whom he says have moulded him into the player he is today.

“My coaches are definitely people who influence me to [play] better; [they] always want me to do more,” said the 16-year-old Cole Harbour resident.

During the offseason, Beals says he is going to spend a lot of time in the gym to prepare for 2017. He says that not only does he plan to improve as a player, but also as a person and a teammate.

This millennial says he never knew how much the game of football would impact his life.

Football is key [to my life],” he expressed. “Most people would look at it as just a sport or hobby, but it’s taught me things I’ve never knew a sport could teach you.”

When asked for his favourite pre-game meal, Beals’ answer was a bit of a surprising one: chicken caesar salad.
