Lions lose to Bulldogs in JV final

The Cambridge jr. Lions put their 9-1 record on the line in the Ontario Varsity Football League championship game at Minto Field in Ottawa on Saturday. The Lions went up against the Brampton Bulldogs in a return to an old SOFAL league rivalry.

Cambridge, as they have done all season, turned to Tyler Varga for their offence, and as he has done all season, Tyler Varga delivered. It wasn’t, however, enough.

Varga and the Cambridge offence didn’t get into gear until the second quarter of Saturday’s game, and by then Brampton was ahead 14-0 on touchdowns from Kalvin Johnson and Jacob Hogan.

Cambridge first score came from a Varga pass to Adam Mueller. Later in the quarter Varga scored on a six yard run to tie the game at fourteen each.

It wouldn’t last. With twenty seconds left in the first half, Brampton’s Gideon Amoah returned the kick-off for a Brampton touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 21-14.

Varga tied the game with an eight yard run at the 8:48 mark of the third quarter, but with no time left on the clock at the end of the quarter, Brampton’s Michael Nelson would score from the one yard line, to put the Bulldogs ahead for good.

In the fourth the two teams would trade touchdowns. Brampton’s Jacob Hogan scored his second of the game, before Tyler Varga ran four yards for his third and final touchdown of the game.

Final score was Brampton 35, Cambridge 28.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
