Lions roar in OV playoff action

Cambridge Lions Varsity Football teams had a good weekend, winning both of their Adams Division semi-final games.
The Jr. Lions pounced on the Mississauga Warriors with a 38 – 10 victory on Friday night in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

The Lions dominated the game from the opening kick-off with Tamaul Lewis-Gostlin making his first of three spectacular special teams plays to pin the Warriors deep in their own end. The defence slammed the door with a quick 3 and out making the Warriors Punt.
With Tyler Varga deep on punt return, Mississauga kicked away from him leaving the Lions in great field position.
On the Lions first offensive play Varga ran for 25 yards putting the Lions on the Warriors five yard line. It only took one more play for Varga to score and get out to a quick 7 – 0 lead.
From that point on the game took on a similar theme with explosive runs by Varga and great defence by the Lions.
The Lions had stand out defensive games from Steven Vongvilaysone, and Dequan French-Gray, who played strong to stop the running attack, while Garret Burke controlled the passing game in the defensive backfield.
The win moves the Lions into the Adams Conference Final game on Sunday at The Rogers Centre in Toronto. The first place seeded Lions will take on the second seeded Niagara Spears. The winner heads to the championship game in Ottawa to play the winner of the Wettges Conference Final between Toronto and Brampton.
On Saturday Night, the peewee Lions beat The Mississauga Warriors 27 – 0 in their Adams Conference Semi-Final.
Playing a tight game in the first half, the Lions defence kept the Warriors at bay. The Lions offence didn’t begin to roll until late in the second quarter, when a deep pass from quarterback Austin Gordon hit Simon, leading to a touchdown.
Carlton Smith and the Lions Offensive line took over the game in the second half when the Lions scored 20 unanswered points.
Lions Defenders frustrated the Warrior offence all game, with big performances from Cal Jefferies, Wyatt Hogan-Crawford and Zack Sauer.
The Lions move on to play the Niagara Spears in their Division Final Game this Saturday in St. Catherines at 10:30 AM. The winner will head to the Championship in Ottawa to play the winner of the Wettges Conference Final between Toronto and Ottawa.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
