Darmouth linebacker joins AUS team’s 2015 class.
Ben Deturbide wants to follow in his family footsteps.
Recently, the 6β1, 240 pound linebacker (middle) from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia committed to the Saint Maryβs Huskies.Β Deturbide will join the team for the 2015 AUS season.
βBy going to Saint Maryβs, I will continue a tradition, as my parents and relatives are Saint Maryβs alumni,β elaborated Deturbide.
Moreover, academics and proximity played a role in his decision.
βSaint Maryβs is close to home and I would like to study criminology,β said the Nova Scotia linebacker.Β βSMU has a great criminology program.β
At a recent team event, Deturbide felt at ease with the Huskies and was energized in the teamβs efforts in rebuilding their success.
βWhen they invited me to attend a recent recruitment dinner,β explained the defensive standout. βI was really impressed.β
βSMU has a great football tradition and the facilities are first class. SMU also made me feel very welcome and I got to meet the coaches as well as the university president. It was a great experience overall.Β Saint Maryβs is also in a rebuild and I want to be a part of helping the Huskies return to being a championship team.β
Deturbide suited up for the Prince Andrew Panthers of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL).Β This past season, he was selected as a Nova Division First Team All-Star as he guided the Panthers to a postseason appearance in the semi-finals.Β The linebacker averaged 17 tackles a game during the season.Β He also recorded 14 sacks, two forced fumbles and two recoveries.
βWe are extremely happy to add a student athlete like Ben to the SMU football family,β commented Huskies Head Coach Perry Marchese.
