Local recruits commit to Bisons

Four arrive from Winnipeg high school programs while two played junior football

Manitoba Bisons football team is pleased to announce the commitment of six local recruits with quarterback Drenin Busch, offensive lineman Braedan Cheang, receivers Anthony Dyck and Riley Harrison plus defensive backs Dane Douglas and Eric Plett for the upcoming 2014 season.

Bison football head coach Brian Dobie, now starting his 19th season with Manitoba, discussed the six recruits.

ā€œWe are very pleased to introduce these six young players from high school and junior football, who represent the 2014 recruiting class of about 25 local and national athletes,” said Dobie. Ā “We look forward to working with these student-athletes as they move forward with their academic and athletic careers as University of Manitoba Bisons.ā€

Drenin Busch 1

Busch finished high school at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate (2010-13) and part of two teams that made the championship final:

– The Winnipeg native was a team MVP, directed the team as they were Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) AAA John Potter finalists in 2013

– In 2013, he led the Potter division with 1,937 passing yards with 17 touchdowns on 99-156 attempts for a 63.5% completion rate

– Plus U18 Team Manitoba starting quarterback and captain along with offensive MVP in three of five games in Moncton

– The 5ā€™11, 185 lbs. pivot was 2012 Murdoch offensive MVP while in 2011 added team MVP and special teams player of the year at Murdoch plus Red River Cup champions and selected as MVP of tournament honour in 2011

– In 2010: special teams player of the year and rookie of the year at Murdoch as they won WHSFL AA Vidruk Champions (10-0 record) while he was starting running back

Cheang completed high school at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate (2010-13) and part of two teams that made the championship final:

– The Winnipeg native was a 2013 Kas Vidruk Lineman Trophy winner, trophy is awarded annually to a WHSFL player who typically plays the “down lineman” position plus displays a high standard in playing ability, school citizenship, fair play and scholastic standing

– In addition, the 6ā€™3ā€, 240 lbs. OL was a 2013 AAA All-Star selection and 2013 AAA Football Honour Roll

– Played on U18 Team Manitoba and captain

– Part of Red River Cup champions in 2011.

Anthony Dyck

Dyck, finished at Kelvin High School (2011-13) with numerous all-star selections:

– The Winnipeg native was a 2013 and 2012 WHSFL AAA All-Star

– In 2013, the 6ā€™3ā€, 170 lbs. receiver ended up fifth in John Potter AAA receiving stats with 24 catches for 425 yards (17.7) with two touchdowns

– He was a Kelvin offensive MVP in 2012 while producing 466 receiving yards on 21 receptions (22.2 avg.) and eight touchdowns

Riley Harrison

Harrison ended his high school (2011-13) at Sisler in Winnipeg while playing at both receiver and quarterback position:

– The Winnipeg native was a multi-position player at Sisler as stared as quarterback and receiver and accumulated over 1,700 all-purpose yards and ten total TDs in 2013

– He played with Team Manitoba in 2013 and 2012 Canada Cup
– In 2011, the 6ā€™1ā€, 185 lbs. dual player was a Sisler team MVP and led the team to a Andy Currie Division A champion as a quarterback and four time Sisler HS MVP

– Played with U-16 team as a receiver

– His older brother Mitchell is already a member of Bison football program on the defence

Douglas played with the British Columbia Football Conference (BCFC) Kamloops Broncos in 2013 after his high school career at Grant Park in Winnipeg.

– In 2013, he was tied for third in the BCFC with four interceptions (58 int. yards) and added 18 total tackles at defensive back position as the Broncos made it to the BCFC Semi-Finals

– The 5ā€™9ā€, 180 lbs. DB was also third in BCFC in punt return yards with 235 yards on 23 attempts (10.2 avg.) and longest was 58 yards in 2013

– Prior to Kamloops, he played at Grant Park High School

Eric Plett

Plett, played with the Prairie Football Conference (PFC) Winnipeg Rifles for two seasons (2012-13) after finishing at Dakota Collegiate.

– In 2013, he was a team captain for the Rifles and was named team rookie of the year in 2012

– The 6ā€™0ā€, 195 lbs. DB had one interception along with 11 total tackles and two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 2013 with the Rifles

– Prior to Winnipeg, the Winnipeg native played at Dakota Collegiate
