LOSSA (Durham): Week 6 recap – Donald Wilson finishes regular season undefeated

Tier One Senior

Thursday, October 27th

Holy Trinity 15, St. Mary 7
Will Hepburn’s two short touchdown runs within a span of ninety seconds late in the second quarter proved to be all the points that the Titans would need as they defeated St. Mary 15-7.  The win lifted the Titans record to one win and two losses, enabling Holy Trinity to finish in third place, ahead of the Monarchs.  The bulk of the Monarch offense was provided by Kempton Clarke.  On at least three occasions, Clarke converted third and long situations into first downs with long runs from punt formation.  He also unleashed a brilliant 75 yard sweep in the third quarter reducing the Titans lead to eight.   Earlier in the game, Clarke picked up his own punt and carried the ball to the end zone however the play was negated as the officials ruled that several Monarch players had violated the no yards rule.  Joe Mastromarco with two converts and Tyler Ganhao with a 55 yard quick kick punt single closed out the scoring for Holy Trinity.  Karl Mueller converted the Clarke touchdown.

Wilson 9. Pickering 7
A Pickering decision to concede a two point safety early in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Donald A. Wilson Gators clinched first place with a 9-7 squeaker over Pickering.  Both teams had entered the game with identical 2-0 records.  Pickering would strike early as 2010 junior league MVP Raekwon Grant carried the ball 73 yards to the house in the opening minute.  Defensively, the Gators quickly adapted and effectively shut down the Trojan offense for the remainder of the game.  Not to be outdone, the Trojans also put on a great defensive display, which included six turnovers on downs (several of which were in the final quarter deep within the red zone) to keep the score close.  A short run by Omar Williams in the third quarter had tied the game at seven setting the stage for the fourth quarter safety.  Mike Stobbart for Pickering and Chivon Gallagher for the Gators added converts on the two majors.  This Thursday, at Oshawa Civic, Wilson will host St. Mary while the defending champion Titans will travel to Pickering to play the Trojans in the semi-final action.

Tier Two Senior

Tuesday, October 25th

Uxbridge 13, Pine Ridge 10
In a game between two undefeated West Division teams, the Uxbridge Tigers prevailed by a 13-10 count in a tightly played defensive contest.  The opening panel saw only a single point recorded and that came off the kicking foot of Chris Gladney.  Lee Cowie upped the lead to a converted touchdown by half time with a short one yard carry.  Sean Smith’s 41 yard field goal pulled the Puma’s with four.  The final four seconds of the third quarter saw over half the points in the game being scored.  Jacob Wilson from the one increased the Tigers lead to 13-3 however Meschach Green unleashed an 80 yard return on the ensuing kick off, which was converted by Smith.  The two teams then returned to solid defensive football through a scoreless fourth quarter.  The win gives Uxbridge first place while the Pumas will finish second.  Both schools will host quarter-final playoff games.

O’Neill 16, Denis O’Connor 7
Trey Campbell’s two touchdown effort led the Red Hawks to their fourth victory in six games.  Brendan Costello opened the scoring with a single point that resulted from a missed field goal and that one point lead held through the opening twelve minutes.  Jeremy Alexander played a big role in keeping the Chargers off the board in the opening panel as he intercepted a Charger pass at the O’Neill ten yard line.  In the second quarter, Campbell produced the games first major with a short three yard run.  Ninety seconds later, the Red Hawks picked up a safety when the punter took a knee in the end zone.  James O’Brien with a 91 yard pass and run play, successfully converted by Steve Benacquista, pulled the Chargers within two at the midway point of the second quarter.  Campbell’s 65 yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the final quarter, along with Costello’s convert, were the only scoring plays in the second half.

Ajax 35, Notre Dame 6
The Ajax Rams stopped a two game losing skid with a 35-6 victory over the Notre Dame Cougars.  Paul Benedetto and Morgan Humes tallied two touchdowns each with Chris Hay contributing one major.  Tobin Semple converted all five touchdowns.  For the Cougars, Brandon Dixon reached the house.

Paul Dwyer 15, Bowmanville 0 (default)

Thursday, October 27th

Paul Dwyer 40, St. Stephen 0
The Paul Dwyer Saints blanked the Royals 40-0 as the Saints finish the season with a perfect 6-0 record.  Pacing the attack for the Saints was Aaron Champagne with two touchdowns and four converts.  Jake Radord, Chris Steenson, Dillando Attotey each contributed one touchdown.  The Saints posted shut out wins against each of their Eastern conference opponents with the only blemish being a touchdown by the Notre Dame Cougars in a league cross over game.

Friday, October 28th

Sinclair 44, Port Perry 6

The Sinclair Celtics picked up their fifth win in six games as they easily turned back the Port Perry Rebels 44-6.  Jordan Spencer-Bailey and Jordan Gillespie both had two touchdown games for the Celtics, who also received touchdowns from Justis Croasdale and Kyle Parker.  Matt Gynn recorded eight kicking points with a field goal and five converts.  Kirk Bricknell posted the lone Rebel touchdown.  Sinclair finishes the season in second place and will open quarter-final play at home against the Ajax Rams.  The Rebels still have one game remaining against the St. Stephen Royals on Tuesday, November 1st.  The winner of that game will travel to Uxbridge to play the Tigers in league quarter-final play.

Pine Ridge 36, Notre Dame 0

The Pumas wrapped up second place in the West division as they downed the Notre Dame Cougars 36-0. The Pumas five touchdowns were recorded by Jer-Ray Tomlinson, Meschach Green, Jackson Harding, Curtis Inniss and Sean Smith.  Smith utilized his foot to successfully converted four touchdowns and also added a two point convert to finish the game with twelve scoring points.  Pine Ridge will host O’Neill in league quarter-final play.

Denis O’Connor 21, Richardson 14

The Denis O’Connor Chargers advanced to post season play as lineman Miguel Cevallos recovered a blocked punt in the Storm end zone breaking a 14-14 stalemate.  The win was the Chargers second in three games after opening the season with three consecutive losses.  The loss relegated the Storm to fifth place with a record of one win and five losses and they therefore will miss the playoffs.  The Chargers, who also had touchdowns from Kuwayne Moore and Mark Manbauman, will travel to Oshawa to play the undefeated Paul Dwyer Saints in the opening round of the playoffs.  Rounding out the Chargers scoring was Alex McIlmoyle with a convert and a two point convert.  Leigh Phillip had an eight point game for the Storm (touchdown and two point convert) while Brendon Zitt recorded a touchdown.

Holy Trinity 47, St. Mary 20
Derek Cyr tied a Holy Trinity school record as he romped for five touchdowns to lead the Titans to a 47-20 win over the Monarchs.  After Cyr had staked the Titans to an early 6-0 lead, the Monachs, who had been outscored 78-6 in their first two games, took the lead with two touchdown passes and a two point convert toss to Josh Henry to stake the Monarchs to a 14-6 lead in the second quarter. The Titans responded with five touchdowns in just over one quarter of play to take a commanding 40-14 lead half way through the third quarter.  Both Chris Waldinsperger and Giovanni Akeson scored touchdowns for the Titans while Can Lay tallied three converts and Wyatt Roefloffzen was credited with a two point convert.  The third Monarch touchdown was scored by Austin Benn.

Wilson 29, Pickering 6
The Gators captured first place in the Tier One Junior Division as they downed the Pickering Trojans 29-6.  Their 23 point margin was their closest game of the season and they have to be considered prohibitive favourites to capture the 2011 league title.  Following a scoreless opening quarter, lineman Trevaughn James picked up the opening two points of the game when the Trojans conceded a safety.  George Gonsalves-Akers (54 yard run) and John Stewart then scored touchdowns to give the Gators a comfortable 15-0 lead.  The ensuing kickoff however saw Alex Hatzinikou return the ball 70 yards to put the Trojans on the board.  Gonsalves-Akers would add a pair of second half touchdowns for the Gators.  Malcolm Branton was successful on three converts.  The Gators will now host the Monarchs and Pickering will travel to Holy Trinity for the Tier One Semi-finals on Thursday.

Tier Two Junior

Results: Tuesday, October 25th

Richardson 34, Dunbarton 0
George Goudogianis and Tevin Lawrence each scored two touchdowns as the Richardson Storm picked up their third win of the season as they shut out the Spartans 34-0.  J’van Manhertz also contributed a touchdown for Richardson.  Goudogianis added four conversions.

Paul Dwyer 28, Bowmanville 6
The Paul Dwyer Saints kept their hopes for a first round playoff home game alive as they downed the Bowmanville Talons 28-6.  Michael D’Annunzio led the four touchdown effort with two majors while Tyran Patton and Marcus Maloney each scored one.  Ian Byberg picked up a two point convert while Michael Fadati produced two single point conversions.  Kyle Kelly had the lone touchdown for the Talons, who have now dropped four in a row after opening the season with a pair of wins.

Ajax 28, O’Neill 0
The Junior Rams remained undefeated as they defeated the O’Neill Red Hawks 28-0 .  The shut out was the fourth of the season for the Rams as the defense has allowed a miniscule 18 points against through six games.  Brad Till and Marcus Simons each reached the end zone twice.  In addition to his two touchdowns, Till added four converts.

St. Stephen 22, Port Perry 21
The Royals were able to edge by the Rebels by the slimmest of margins 22-21 to pick up their fourth win in five games.  Both teams scored three touchdowns with the difference coming down to converts.  The Royals were able to pick up two two point converts (Cemron Asselin and Adam Bateman) while the Rebels were held to one two pointer (Trenton Roy-Mugford) and a single pointer (Braeden Vavassori).  Mitch Reece with two and Asselin produced six pointers for St. Stephen while Matt Field, Roy-Mugford and Tony Romaguolo replied for the Rebels.

Uxbridge 18, Pine Ridge 0

Through three quarters of football, the Uxbridge Tigers held a precarious 3-0 lead over the Pumas thanks to a 16 yard field goal by Callen Hageman.  Less than 90 seconds into the final quarter, Victor Cho with a solid tackle of a Puma in the end zone earned the Tigers a two point safety.  Chris Perry with a couple of short runs, one of which was converted by Hageman would close out the scoring as the Tigers prevailed 18-0.  The win ended the Pumas hopes of finishing in the top eight and qualifying for post season competition.  With the win, the Tigers finish with a record of four wins and two losses, which should earn them a quarter-final opening home date.

Friday, October 28th

Port Perry 32, Richardson 28
The Port Perry Rebels won their third game in their past four as they withstood a three touchdown fourth quarter onslaught from the Richardson Storm to prevail 32-28.  The Rebels were led by Trenten Roy-Mugford who scored the first three touchdowns of the game (two via the pass and one via an interception) to hold a commanding 19-0 lead.  J’Van Manhertz reduced the Rebel deficit to thirteen in the final minute of the opening half with a six yard pass touchdown reception.  A six yard run by Isaiah Douglas restored the double digit lead for the Rebels in the third quarter.  Two touchdowns by George Goudogianis and Tevin Lawrence in the opening five minutes of the final quarter would move the Storm within six (trailing 26-20).  With just over two minutes remaining Trenton Roy-Mugford recorded his fourth touchdown of the game to provide the Rebels with some insurance.  Benjamin Mattison scored for the Storm on the final play of the game and Basir Ahmad’s two point convert closed out the scoring.  Vernon Petty and George Goudogianis each contributed two single point conversions.

Monday, October 31st

St. Stephen 21, Paul Dwyer 12
The St. Stephen Royals defeated the Paul Dwyer Saints 21-12 to earn the right to host a league quarter-final game.  Running back Mitch Reece accounted for two touchdowns with Darby Bradley scoring one.  Dennis Bastas converted all three majors.  Dwyer, who finishes fifth with the loss, scored two touchdowns, one by Tyran Patton and the other by Ian Byberg.  It appears that Dwyer will open the playoffs in Uxbridge while the Royals will likely be hosting the Richardson Storm.

Ajax 28, Bowmanville 0
A three touchdown effort by Trey Humes helped the Rams complete the regular season without a loss.  Humes scored all three touchdowns on runs of 5, 1 and 10 yards.  The fourth Ram touchdown was scored by Jeffery Benedetto.  Brad Till converted each of the touchdowns.  These two teams will meet again in the opening round of the playoffs.

Eastdale 48, O’Neill 19
The Eagles matched the Rams with a perfect season as they rolled to a 48-19 victory over O’Neill.  Tyler Simpson led the Eagles seven touchdown effort with three majors, while Cody Moss recorded two.  Single touchdowns went to Cody Dale and Riley Palmer.  Benjamin Donnelly converted six scores.  Dan MaNeaney matched Simpson as he scored all three Red Hawk touchdowns while Philip Cooper-Smith added a convert.  With only one win in seven league games, the Red Hawks will not advance to the playoffs.  Eastdale will likely be hosting Port Perry in league quarter-final play.

The fourth Ram touchdown was scored by Jeffery Benedetto. Brad Till converted each of the touchdowns. These two teams will meet again in the opening round of the playoffs.

Eastdale 48, O’Neill 19
The Eagles matched the Rams with a perfect season as they rolled to a 48-19 victory over O’Neill. Tyler Simpson led the Eagles seven touchdown effort with three majors, while Cody Moss recorded two. Single touchdowns went to Cody Dale and Riley Palmer. Benjamin Donnelly converted six scores. Dan MaNeaney matched Simpson as he scored all three Red Hawk touchdowns while Philip Cooper-Smith added a convert. With only one win in seven league games, the Red Hawks will not advance to the playoffs. Eastdale will likely be hosting Port Perry in league quarter-final play.
