Manitoba football community in mourning

Manitoba football is coping with the loss of one of their own.

Yesterday, Kevin Boyd passed away. Β He was only 45 years old.

Most recently, he was Head Coach of Brandon’s Crocus Plains Plainsmen of the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL). Overall, he has instructed close to 24 years and had extensive experience. Β He previously coached at both the Six Nations Cup and Red River Cup tournaments as well as a stint with North Dakota’s Garrison Troopers.

As a player, he helped the Plainsmen win a WHSFL Championship in 1987. Β Additionally, Boyd suited up for multiple teams during his career including CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos and NCAA Division 2 team, Minot State Beavers.

He was drafted in 1993 during the CFL Supplemental Draft.

The WHSFL issued the following statement yesterday:

“It is with great sadness that the WHSFL announces the passing of Coach Kevin Boyd from Crocus PlainsCoach Boyd passed away this morning, Feb 29, 2016 at age 45. Β We extend our condolences to Kevin’s wife and Family.Β Kevin was a great friend and an even greater mentor to the young people in Brandon.Β He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all.”

At press time, funeral arrangements were not known.
