Held annually since 1925, the East-West Shrine game has been a showcase for some of U.S. college football’s top graduating players. Invited to play in this year’s game as a member of the East team is McMaster offensive tackle Matt Sewell, who will have the opportunity to show off his considerable blocking skills in front of talent evaluators from both the Canadian and National Football Leagues.
The 2013 East-West Shrine Game will be played on January 19th at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The game has been a launching point for many outstanding professional careers, and NFL MVPs Tom Brady and Brett Favre are among the list of former participants.
A Milton native, Sewell was recently ranked as the No. 2 prospect on the CFL listing of players eligible for the 2013 Canadian player draft. He will head to Florida for a week of practice and testing with NFL and CFL scouts in attendance, before suiting up in the game on Saturday, which will be telecast live on the NFL network.
Since the inclusion of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) players began in 1985, McMaster has had three athletes invited to participate in this gathering of elite players. Named a 2012 first-team OUA all-star and a second-team CIS All-Canadian, Sewell joins some select company as previous Marauder invitees were Hec Crighton Trophy recipients Kojo Aidoo in 2001 and Jesse Lumsden in 2005.
The East-West Shrine Game is the longest-running college football all-star game, and proceeds from the event are used to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children across North America.
