For the second straight week, McMaster gave up an early touchdown as the Warriors used an option pass from Nick Anapolsky to Paul Cecile to grab a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. However, the rest of the first half belonged to the Maroon as the Marauder offense dominated the line of scrimmage.
A one-yard TD plunge by Jimmy Hill tied the game before the end of the first-quarter, and the Marauders exploded for 37 points in the second quarter, while playing with a stiff wind at their backs.
Touchdowns from Kyle Quinlan, Tyler Loveday, Dahlin Brooks, and Kasean Davis led the way for the offense, while linebacker Nick Shortill returned an interception 30 yards for another McMaster major score. It’s also the second straight week the Marauder defense has come up with a pick-six against opposing quarterbacks.
In only one half of action, quarterback Kyle Quinlan completed 16 of 20 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Jimmy Hill rushed for 125 yards on 15 carries and one major, before letting the back-ups take over. Kasean Davis added 93 yards on six carries, including a 45-yard dash for the end zone during the second quarter blitz.
The youthful Waterloo team showed some grit in the third quarter, putting together scoring drives that ended up in touchdowns for tailback Ryan DiRisio and receiver Nick Anapolsky, but by then the game was well in hand for McMaster.
On the Marauder side, Coach Ptaszek was able to get all his players on the field in the second half, and behind Marshall Ferguson, who completed 8 of 11 passes for 129 yards and a TD toss to Brad Fochesato, and the solid running attack of freshmen Wayne Moore and Kingsley Amankwaa, who both crossed the goal line, McMaster was able to control the game.
Defensively, McMaster had three interceptions, with Mike Kashak and Marek Borucki making picks to go along with Shortill’s pick-six. The Marauders have made eight interceptions in the first two games.
Unofficially, the Marauders had 712 yards of total offense, while giving up 267 yards to Waterloo.
McMaster will be back on the road next Saturday, when the team travels to Ottawa to play the always tough Gee-Gees.
