MARAUDERS TOP LIONS (stats & video)


The York University Lions football team fell to the visiting McMaster Marauders 64-6 in Saturday afternoon (Oct. 2) action at York Stadium.

The Lions’ lone score came in the third quarter on a 10-yard pass from quarterback D.J. Frank (Richmond Hill, Ont.) to running back Chidi Small (Toronto). The touchdown capped off an impressive four-play, 82-yard drive by the Lions.

Frank played most of the game under centre after coming in for starter Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.). He completed 10 of 17 passes for 131 yards, with the touchdown and one interception.

Jonelle Tolbert (Mississauga, Ont.), the Lions top receiver all season, once again held that title in this game with seven receptions for 95 yards. Fifty-seven of those yards came on three plays on the Lions’ scoring drive.

Mike Boyd (Hamilton, Ont.) had a big game on defence, leading all players with 8.5 tackles and adding a pass break-up. Steven Reading (Fenelon Falls, Ont.), who leads the team in tackles, recorded 7.5 of his own and recorded a sack. Theo Feroiu (Toronto) also added a sack to go along with seven tackles.

The Lions fell behind early after allowing three touchdowns in the first quarter. Two of those were thanks to starting quarterback Kyle Quinlan, who completed nine passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns overall on the day before coming out of the game.

The Lions also had a hard time stopping the Marauders on the run. Starting running back Tanner Forsyth ran for 107 yards on 12 carries and added a touchdown in the first quarter. After the half Ryan Kotar took over the majority of the rushing duties and recorded 121 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.

The Marauders continued to build on their big lead in the second by scoring another 32 points.

McMaster’s pace slowed after the half as the Marauders scored just one point on a rouge while the Lions got on the board with their touchdown. McMaster capped off the scoring with another touchdown and a field goal in the final frame before the end of the contest.

With the win, the Marauders improved to 4-2 on the season and moved up to third place in the OUA standings, behind Western and Ottawa and their matching 5-1 records. The Lions fell to 0-5.

The Lions will be back on the road next weekend for a game against the Windsor Lancers (1-4), who are coming off their bye. Kick off is set for 1pm.
