Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) Week 5 Recap

Week five of the Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) is in the books and the Saint John Storm is still at the top of the league standings after another convincing victory.

The Storm defeated the Halifax Xplosion 42-0 to win their fifth consecutive game to remain in first place.Β Β Meanwhile in the other game, the Moncton Vipers kept pace with the Storm as they pulled out a 41-0 decisive win over the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators.

All four teams have a bye this week as it is the Canada Day long weekend.

Here are the complete results for Week 5 MWFL action:

Saint John Storm 42, Halifax Xplosion 0:

Last Saturday in rainy conditions at Wanderer’s Grounds, the Saint John Storm had little trouble as they crushed the Halifax Xpolsion 42-0.

In the Xplosion’s first drive of the game, Ashlee Clements caused a sac fumble and Lisa Harlow was there to pick up the ball for a 50 yard touchdown. Kendra Jones added to the point totals for the Storm as she rushed for a 40 yard score.Β Β In the second quarter, Lori Boyles scored on an 85 yard punt return after a block from Kirstie Perry.Β Β To finish off the first half, Harlow had a five yard quarterback keep touchdown.

Trina Graves blocked a punt in the third quarter.Β Β Boyles scored her second touchdown of the game as she scored on a 65 yard return while Harlow caught an interception which led to a three yard quarterback keep.

Overall, Jones had over 100 rushing yards while Meghan Mullet was successful in all her conversion attempts as she was six for six on the day.

Defensively for the Storm, Clements and Graves each registered a sack.Β Β Moreover, Graves and Perry had seven tackles each in the game for the victors.

The turning point for the victors was the sack fumble and subsequent touchdown score in the first quarter of the game.Β Β Additionally, the Storm’s offensive line was successful in run blocking.

“Many players stepped up to play in positions at a high level where they had not previously played,” assesses Storm defensive coordinator Larry Harlow of his team’s performance.Β Β  “Special teams are just hitting stride in time for the playoffs.”

With this win, the Storm moves to 5-0 on the season.Β Β Meanwhile, the Xplosion are still in search of their first victory as they are at the bottom of the standings with a 0-5 record.

For the Xplosion, Kristin Amiro and Lindsay Bennett had great pass completions while Elin Kays and Cynthia Foley had nine yards longer than five yards and six first downs.

“As always, our quarterback Ashley Howatt was on fire while the defense really stepped up,” adds Tasha McMaster in her postgame assessment.Β Β “A big mention to Emily Armsworthy who proved her mighty munchkin name by making countless hits and tackles.”

“The Xplosion was come a long way over a short time with each game getting better and better. We are working hard on our tackling and blocking and it shows.”

Harlow agrees with the improvement shown by their opponents.

“Halifax was unrelenting and ran well in the middle,” says the Storm’s defensive coordinator.Β Β “Their defense played with determination and never gave up. A much improved team.”

The Saint John Storm will battle for first place in their upcoming game against the Moncton Vipers on Saturday July 7, 2012.Β Β Kickoff is slated for 4:00pm at KV High School.Β Β As for the Halifax Xplosion, they will face the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators on Saturday July 7th at Scotia North.Β Β Game time is 4:00pm.

Moncton Vipers 41, Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators 0:

In Fredericton last Saturday, the Moncton Vipers were in total command of the game from start to finish.Β Β The Vipers dismantled the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators 41-0.

Marie-Noelle Beaulieu led the offensive charge for the victors as she scored two touchdowns in the game.Β Β Tara Keohan also contributed with two majors while Justine Barter found the end zone once.Β Β Janelle Brine was successful on two field goal and five conversion attempts in the game.

Defensively for the Vipers, Tina Theriault led the way with eight tackles.Β Β Karen Newcomb caught an interception.Β Β The defensive unit held the Lady Gladiators at bay only letting their opponents in the red zone twice.

“The key to the game was the ability of the Vipers to move the ball and stop the rush of the Gladiators,” reflects Vipers acting coach Jenny Miller.Β Β “Our team is strong at all positions and we are gaining strength with intense structured practices and dedicated team members.”

“We focus on teamwork and communication which allows us to keep focused on the game. We will be practicing hard in the bye week, mending injuries and getting ready to end the regular season on top.”

With this victory, the Vipers are now 4-1 on the season.Β Β As for the Lady Gladiators, they slide to 1-4 on the season.

It will be a battle for first place as the Moncton Vipers are set to take on the league leading Saint John Storm in their next game on Saturday July 7, 2012.Β Β Kickoff is at 4:00pm at KV High School.Β Β Meanwhile, the Fredericton RV World Lady Gladiators will look to get back in the win column as the team takes on the Halifax Xplosion on Saturday July 7, 2012.Β Β The game will be played at Scotia North at 4:00pm.
