McGill has “growing and ambitious team of winners” says Manitoba recruit (VIDEO)

Winnipeg kicker joins RSEQ team’s 2016 class

Findlay Brown will be calling La Belle Province home for the next few years.

The 5’11, 175 pound kicker/punter from Winnipeg, Manitoba has committed to the McGill Redmen.  Brown will join the team for the 2016 RSEQ season.

For his part, there was never a doubt where he wanted to begin his CIS career.  Overall, the kicker was impressed with both the academic and football programs at the Quebec campus.

“I am so excited to have committed to McGill,” expressed Brown.  “Not only do they have what in my opinion is the best management program in the country, they have a growing and ambitious football team full of winners.”

“From my first contact with Coach Hilaire and his staff they have been professional and engaging with their ambitions for the program, and what they want to achieve really grabbed my attention. Couple that with the amazing management faculty they have at McGill, and from day one McGill was my first choice.”

This past fall, Brown helped the Vincent Massey Trojans of the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) win the ‘AAA’ ANAVETS Bowl as the team defeated St. Paul’s Crusaders in the championship game.

During his time with the Trojans, the kicker’s longest field goal was 63 yards, his longest punt was 55 with a 4.5 second hang time and his longest kickoff was 75 yards.

Among the honours he has received during his career include WHSFL All-Star as well as both Trojans Special Teams Player of the Year and Highest Average Awards honours.

As he realized his ultimate gridiron dream of playing at the CIS level, it is not lost on Brown the path he took to get there, especially the fact he wasn’t playing this sport up until a couple of years ago.  The kicker gives credit to the Trojans coaching staff and teammates for playing a significant role in a smooth transition process.

“Up until two years ago I mainly played soccer, until the head coach of my school team the Vincent Massey Trojans, Kelsey McKay recruited me to kick and punt, hearing from my soccer coach that I had a strong leg,” recalled Brown.  “The only problem was, the season started in four days at Investors Group Field and I had a soccer game that same day!”

“I ended up arriving late to the stadium and ended up putting on my pads in the parking lot before running down the tunnel just in time for the start of the game. We ended up losing that game, but from then on I loved playing football, especially on that team and I have been so impressed by the commitment of Coach Mckay and the whole Trojans coaching staff. Everyone on the team has been so helpful in getting me to this fantastic moment, and it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t mention them.”
