McGill retools staff, adds Laramee and more in coming weeks

The McGill Redmen have begun to retool their staff and have made their first big addition. Danny Laramee, formerly of the Saint Mary’s Huskies, joins Mcgill to run the offense. This is the first in a series of additions to the McGill staff. More additions will be announced by the middle of January.

Danny Laramee joins the staff after leading the Saint Mary’s Huskies Defense and Special teams units the past 3 years. Danny was also short listed for the Ottawa University Gee Gee head coaching position but pulled out when it was ‘not the right fit’ for he and his family.

Reducing his commute from one and half hours from 18 hours was one of the main reasons for Danny resigning from SMU. “After 3 years of commuting from my home in Ottawa, not seeing enough of my wife and dogs, I had to make a choice that would get me closer to home. I enjoyed my years with Saint Mary’s, enjoyed the players, and enjoyed the coaches. I especially want to thank Steve Sumarah for the opportunity. He is a great guy to work with”.

Steve Sumarah told halifax newspaper reporter Monty Mosher this about Laramee: “Heā€™s as qualified as anybody is in the country,” Sumarah said Wednesday. “He did a fantastic job for us and I think the program is better for having Dan here.”

It has also been reported that Danny is being considered for the “new” Carleton head coaching position. When asked he said “The job does not exist at the moment so my focus is on getting the offense in the right direction at McGill. If Carleton brings back a team it would be something that I would be interested in because my ultimate goal is to be a head coach.”

McGill coach Clint Uttley said this about the appointment and the Carleton speculation.
“Danny is the best guy available for this position. He will do great things with our offense and if the Carleton position is announced and he is a candidate we will support him in any way we can and with any decision he makes.”

Carleton is rumoured to be ‘restarting’ their program as early as 2012 or 2013. Hiring a head coach would have to be done a year or year and a half in advance.
