McGill snags US recruit (VIDEO)

Florida linebacker/tight end signs with RSEQ team’s 2015 class.

The McGill Redmen has reaped the rewards of their recruitment efforts south of the border.

Recently, Dane Wagner committed to the football program.Β  The 6’0, 200 pound linebacker/tight end from Niceville, Florida will join the team for the 2015 RSEQ season.

Wagner comes to the Redmen after completing a season with Massachusetts prep team, Phillips Andover Big Blue.Β  This past season, he amassed 90 tackles, recorded four sacks, and caught an interception and fumble recovery in eight games at the middle linebacker position.Β  In 2014, he earned All-New England honours.

Previous to the Big Blue, Wagner guided his high school team, Niceville Eagles to a Florida 7A State Championship appearance.Β  Despite an overall record of 13-2, Eagles lost in the Championship Final.

For his part, the linebacker credits a recent Redmen commit and former teammate for introducing him to the Redmen.

β€œAfter Thanksgiving break, my teammate and dorm mate fellow McGill commit, Cameron Fryer, told me about his visits that he had taken over the break,” recalled Wagner.Β  β€œHe told me about McGill and I looked up the school and the city of Montreal.”

β€œIt seemed like an awesome place and the academics are unbeatable, but the only thing that worried me was their recent struggles on the field.”

Soon after, Wagner went into recruitment process mode with the Redmen.Β  Once he took in official visits and deliberated several options (including NCAA Division 2 and 3 schools), the rest was history.

I sent the Ron Hilaire my film and he loved it and wanted me to come for a visit,” reflected the linebacker.Β  β€œI took a visit with my father for the weekend.”

β€œI loved the city, the school, and the coaches. After talking with the coaches and the players, I knew that the McGill football program was on the rise. I went back to school and took a few more visits. After weighing my options, McGill seemed like the best option for me. I chose McGill because of the opportunities that it will bring to me after college, the awesome city of Montreal, and a football program that I truly believe will be a winning program very soon.”
