McMaster adds Brady to defensive coaching staff

The former head coach and defensive coordinator at Mount Allison University, where he won consecutive Loney Bowl titles as Atlantic University Sport (AUS) champion in 2013 and 2014, Scott Brady was announced Thursday as the Marauders defensive coordinator in 2018.

“We’re excited to bring Scott on board,” said McMaster Head Coach Greg Knox of the appointment. “He is a bright, hard-working football coach who will work hands on with me coaching the defence and be a great fit on our full-time staff, helping drive our recruiting and player development efforts.”

“I’m very excited to join the Marauder family,” said Brady. “It was a difficult decision to leave Mount Allison and the community of Sackville, New Brunswick. My wife and I have built so many great relationships there over the years.”

“But this is an incredible opportunity to join an outstanding program and to work closely with Coach Knox. I can’t wait to get to work.”

Brady arrives at McMaster following eight seasons on staff at Mount Allison, where he assumed the role of defensive coordinator in 2011 before ascending to the head coaching position in 2016. During his tenure, the Mounties advanced to four straight Loney Bowls (2013-16), and achieved the first undefeated regular season in school history in 2014.

His defence achieved its peak in 2014, ranking first in the country in points allowed per game (eight), first in takeaways (29), third in yards per game allowed (324), third in rushing yards allowed per game (98) and third in sacks (27).

In addition to his roles at Mount Allison, Brady served as defensive coordinator for Team East at the CIS East-West Bowl in 2013, and has twice featured as a guest coach at a Canadian Football League training camp, serving with the Toronto Argonauts in 2011 and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2015, where he worked alongside Knox.

Also joining the Marauders staff in 2018, Kelly Ireland will serve as an offensive assistant while aiding in recruiting efforts.

Playing his varsity football at Saint Mary’s University, Ireland was a Vanier Cup finalist in 1999 and a two-time AUS all-star, who was drafted by the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes in 1998.

Ireland moved into coaching in 2000, spending four seasons as the offensive line coach with the Hamilton Ironmen before assuming head coaching duties at Brantford, Ont.’s Assumption high school. There, he won three Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association (CWOSSA) championships and advanced to the Western Bowl on two occasions.

Spending five seasons on staff at his alma mater St. Mary’s, where he coached the offensive line and coordinated the running game, Ireland was also the head coach and offensive coordinator of the Ontario Football Conference’s Brantford Bisons between 2014 and 2016.

“We are happy to add a coach of Kelly’s calibre to our staff here at McMaster,” said Knox of Ireland’s addition.

McMaster also bids farewell to an integral member of the Marauders staff in 2018, as Eric Boyd, who managed football operations and video in 2017, departs the program to pursue business opportunities.

Boyd spent four seasons with the Marauders, during which time he rose from a role as video coordinator to take the lead on all logistical facets of the football program.

“Eric has been a valuable asset and big part of our program behind the scenes, and will hopefully be able to remain involved with the Marauders in some capacity moving forward as he moves on in the corporate world,” said Knox.
