McMaster Football to Tackle National Champion Laval

Hamilton, Ont. – There is no better measuring stick than to match up with the best, so the McMaster University Football team will travel to Laval University for a pre-season tilt against the defending Vanier Cup champions, the Laval Rouge et Or, to be played at PEPS Stadium on Sunday, August 28, 2011.

The trip will be excellent preparation for the Marauders as they look to move up in the OUA standings in 2011.

McMaster football training camp will open on Monday, August 22 and the team will leave for Quebec City after practise on Friday, August 26. The teams will have an integrated practise on Saturday, August 28, enabling Marauder players and staff to work with their Laval counterparts as both teams prepare for conference play.

The Marauders were scheduled to visit Laval in 2010, but had to cancel the trip after the OUA schedule was revised, due to Waterloo suspending its football program last season.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our players to experience something different and to see how one of the most successful programs in Canada runs training camp,” said McMaster Coach Stefan Ptaszek. “We’ve had pre-season scrimmages before, but playing a team like Laval should be great preparation heading into OUA play.”

Laval completed a perfect season in 2010, going 13 and 0 and winning the Vanier Cup over Calgary 29-2 at Peps Stadium, which is the home field for the Rouge et Or.

The Marauders will return to Hamilton after the game to resume training camp in preparation for their OUA opener versus the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston on Monday, September 5, 2011. McMaster’s home opener is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th versus the defending OUA Champion Western Mustangs at Ron Joyce Stadium.
