McMaster hires Flaxman

The McMaster football program is pleased to announce the addition of Tom Flaxman to the coaching staff in the position of Director of Football Operations & Quality Control and Offensive Assistant.   Coach Flaxman returns to McMaster, where he was a player for the Marauders and a member of the 2003 Yates Cup Championship team.

Flaxman comes to Hamilton having spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Western University, holding the role of Recruiting Coordinator and Offensive Assistant  for the Mustangs.

“I’m excited to welcome Tom to our McMaster family,” commented Marauder Coach Greg Knox. “He brings a wealth of coaching experience in all three phases of the game and will work hard supporting our recruiting efforts. This is a great fit with our veteran staff and will provide an immediate boost to the program.”

Originally from Etobicoke, Flaxman served two seasons (2012, 2013) at the University of Toronto, where he was the Offensive Coordinator  for the Varsity Blues, helping the team finish 4-4 for the 2013 season; their best record in 20 years.  Also on the Toronto staff that season was Greg Knox, who served as the Blues’ Defensive Coordinator.

“It’s very exciting to be back in the Marauder family, and get a little closer to home” said Flaxman, on trading in his purple for Maroon.  “It was a tough decision to leave Western because of the great people they have there and the relationships you build.  Coach Marshall has been a friend and mentor, but this is a tremendous opportunity that was offered by Coach Knox and the University, and I’m happy to be part of it.”

Transferring to Acadia University for the final two seasons of his playing career, Flaxman helped the Axemen capture consecutive Atlantic University Sport (AUS) titles in 2005 and 2006. He stayed with the Axemen football program in a coaching role, acting as Running Back Coach in 2008, Special Teams Coordinator in 2009, and finally as Co-Offensive Coordinator in 2011, in a season that saw Acadia claim the AUS Championship.

In addition to coaching in the CIS, Flaxman brings extensive experience from coaching in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), and was selected to the 2014 Team Ontario Selects coaching staff  as running back coach, and as an offensive assistant for  Team Ontario at the 2015 Canada Cup.

Along with the addition of Coach Flaxman, the Marauder Football program is pleased to confirm that the entire coaching staff will be returning, including:  Jon Behie, Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator; Joe Sardo, Defensive Coordinator; Rob Underhill, Special Teams Coordinator;  and  Frank Gesztesi, Recruiting Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.
