Metro Bowl: 30 years of history (all-time winners)

Donald A. Wilson (Whitby) won the 30th Metro Bowl final this week. The overtime victory marks the second time a Metro Bowl was tied after regulation. St. Michael’s College holds the record for most Metro Bowl victories with 7 in 9 appearances. Six teams are tied with 2 wins each, while 11 teams have won the Bowl once.

The current format features the league champions from Durham (LOSSA), Independent Schools (CISAA), Toronto (combination of TDCAA and TDSSAA schools) and York (YRAA).
This format has been in place since 2003 with one exception. In 2006, with the Central Bowl being discontinued, the Simcoe County league champion (GBSSA) competed. They met the Independent League Champions in a Quarter-final game. In 2007, GBSSA moved to the National Capital Bowl playoffs.

The formula being used to determine, which league plays which league is as follows: From 2005 through 2008, the two leagues who won the semi-final games in the previous season meet in one semi-final game while the two who lost meet in the other semi-final. This ensured that there was at least one new league in the final each season. This changed in 2009 and apparently the leagues now rotate opponents in the semi-finals.

Prior to 1999, the suburban Toronto based teams competed within borough divisions and the schools whom advanced to the Metro Bowl from those divisions have been credited with representing that league. Both the Catholic and Public board within Toronto now compete in one combined division broken down by region. Schools advancing have been acknowledged by their school board.

St. Michael’s College moved from the TDCAA to the CISAA division. For a few years, they actually competed in both leagues. Their last Metro Bowl representation on behalf of the TDCAA was in 2002.
