Saturday’s pre-season exhibition outing in Edmonton brought mixed results for the Calgary Colts.
They got the better of the Edmonton Huskies 7-3 in their first mini-game but lost 13-7 to the Edmonton Wildcats in their second 30-minute contest at Clarke Park.
“Any time you play a game you want to win,” said Colts head coach John Stevens.
“We saw some good things and we saw some things that we need to improve. Now we move on to next week.”
Cam Fox accounted for the Colts first score with a 15-yard run. Quarterback Jeremy Long snuck in for a major in the second game.
The Colts now prepare for their Prairie Football Conference regular season opener Sunday, August 18 on the road against the Regina Thunder at Mosaic Stadium.
The Colts will return to Edmonton the following two weeks after that to face the Wildcats August 25 and the Huskies August 31. They don’t have their home opener until September 8.when the Winnipeg Rifles come to McMahon Stadium.
Regina blasted Winnipeg 32-8 in exhibition play Saturday in Brandon, Manitoba. The Saskatoon Hilltops had their annual pre-season game with their alumni on Friday and won 10-9 on a last-minute field goal.
Stevens used five quarterback on Saturday as he looks to replace his go-to guy from 2012, Derek Cooper, who has used up all his eligibility and is not back.
“There hasn’t been any determination,” Stevens responded when asked if he had decided who will start in Regina.
Kickers Andrew Fabian and Marshal Broom each converted a touchdown on Saturday.
Stevens and his coaching staff will spend the next couple of days examining the videotape of Saturday’s play to sort out things they want to see improve in Regina.
Stevens is also the Colts’ defensive coordinator.
“Defensively there were some good things, but at this point there were probably more things that we need to fix,” he said.
