Morgan taken in 2nd round of CFL Draft by Blue Bombers

TORONTO – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected Queen’s Gaels defensive back Brendan Morgan (Pickering, Ont.) in the second round of the CFL draft on Tuesday night.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers chose Morgan 15th overall taking the defensive back in the second round with their third pick on the night to that point. Morgan, who joined Queen’s after transferring from Virginia, helped lead the Gaels to a Yates Cup appearance in 2013 which was his first full season with Queen’s.

He racked up 15 tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss in six games during the 2013 campaign for the Tricolour while starting the season as a running back before settling in on the defensive side of the ball.

Morgan is now the seventh player from the 2013 who is in the CFL as he joins Andrew Lue (Montreal), Scott Macdonell (Ottawa), Derek Wiggan (Calgary), Matt Webster (Saskatchewan), Giovanni Aprile (Hamilton) and Alex Carroll (Saskatchewan). Other former Gaels in the CFL include Rob Bagg (Saskatchewan) and Shomari Williams (Calgary) while Matt O’Donnell is with the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL.

It will be a reuniting of sorts as Morgan joins his former defensive coordinator at Queen’s Pat Tracey who now is the special teams coordinator with the Blue Bombers.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
