Mount Allison Mounties move into tie for second place with win over Saint Mary’s Huskies

SACKVILLE, NB — The Mount Allison Mounties earned their second win of the season on Saturday with a convincing 25-12 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. With the win, the Mounties jump back into a three-way tie for second place with Saint Mary’s and StFX at 2-4. The Acadia Axemen improved to 5-1 with a 47-26 victory over St. FX.

 The Mounties were once again led by freshman Jordan Botel who ran for a season high 197 yards on an AUS record 40 carries. Botel averaged 4.8 yards per carry and scored the Mounties second touchdown of the game in the third quarter. All in, the Mounties ran for 254 yards on the day — a day that saw them collect 342 yards of total offense while holding Saint Mary’s to 198 yards. Botel stretched his league-leading yards total to 637 yards in six games so far this year.
The Huskies opened the scoring with Brett Lauther connecting on a 30-yard field goal with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter. Mount Allison responded with a field goal of their own with three minutes gone in the second quarter when Alec Curtis knocked home a field goal from 17 yards, making the score 3-3.
The Mounties took the lead, a lead they would never relinquish, when fifth-year receiver Jarrett King capped off a four-play, 38-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown reception from Brandon Leyh. On the ensuing kickoff, Alec Curtis drilled one through the Huskies’ end zone, making it 11-3 for the Mounties. The Mounties’ defense held for the rest of the first half and the teams entered the locker rooms at half time with the score 11-3.
Saint Mary’s pulled to within one point early in the second quarter, capitalizing on an interception that eventually led to a six-yard touchdown run by Jesse Lacle. On the very next possession, the Mounties went back to work, driving 89 yards down the field before Botel found the end zone from 14 yards out. This restored the Mounties’ eight-point lead at 18-10. The Mounties extended their lead four minutes later when second-year running back Emmanuel Musangu punched in a six-yard touchdown. The Mounties were put in scoring position moments earlier when second-year Mountie Donovan Saunders returned a Brett Lauther punt 47 yards to the Mounties’ 22-yard line.
With the score 25-10 for the Mounties, the defense continued their dominance, giving up only two points off rouges by Brett Lauther, first with seven seconds gone in the fourth quarter, and second with seven minutes remaining. Second-year Mountie and reigning AUS rookie of the year Jacob LeBlanc led the Mounties with 6.5 tackles. Second-year linebacker Rich Deschamps had five tackles, as did Mounties’ captain and defensive leader Justin Richard. The Mounties’ defense also had three interceptions on the day, one by Richard, one by safety Kwame Adjei, and one by Saunders to end the game.
This marks the second time the Mounties have been beaten Saint Mary’s at MacAulay Field this year, having defeated them 16-10 in exhibition play on September 1. The Mounties now travel to St. FX to play the X-Men on October 20 at 2:00 p.m. with big playoff implications on the line. A win by the Mounties will clinch the Mounties a second playoff berth in the past three years.
