Mounties acquire local talent

Sackville slotback newest recruit to join AUS team’s 2015 class.

The Mount Allison Mounties have added a local product to their football program.

Liam McDougall is the newest Mountie.  The 6’2, 215 pound slotback from Sackville, New Brunswick will join the AUS Champions for 2015 season.

“Liam is very versatile,” commented Mounties Head Coach Kelly Jeffrey.  “Throughout high school he played a number of positions and excelled at them all.”

“His rare combination of size and catching ability allows him to block and also make tough catches in traffic.”

Recently, McDougall suited up for the Tantramar Titans of the New Brunswick High School Football League (NBHSFL). The 2014 season marked his first year of playing the game at the high school level.  McDougall was selected as NBHSFL 12 Man Eastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year this past year.

For McDougall, his commitment to the Mounties is a childhood dream realized.

“I’m from Sackville New Brunswick so I grew up around MTA and always going to football games as a kid,” reflected the slotback.  “One of the reasons I decided to go to MTA is because of the coaching staff and the players on the team.”

“Choosing MTA was an easy decision as it is in my hometown but yet a great university with a great football program.”

Titans Coach David Hicks instructed McDougall this past season.  Hicks believes that the slotback brings a lot of attributes which will only help the Mounties, as evidenced by his time with the Titans.

“He is a versatile player who can play numerous positions,” said Hicks.  “He is very coachable and will be a fine addition to the football program at Mount Allison.

“Offensively he was our go to guy.  He lined up as a running back, slot back and tight end/halfback. Liam had around 400 yards rushing, and 350 years receiving. At the end of the season he was chosen the offensive player of the year.  Liam also served as our punter an acted as a punt returner in many of our games.”

While he only played one season with the Titans, he did not look out of sorts with the team and also proved he could play both sides of the ball.

“On defence, Liam lined up at defensive end,” added Hicks.  “He proved to be a fine defensive player who could always be counted on to come up with a big play when needed.”

“This was Liam’s first year of High School football.  He played minor football but decided to take a break from the game during his grade 10 and 11 years.”
