MTA Mounties add former York Lions coach to staff

Mounties add new recruiting coordinator to their team.

In an off-season that has been ripe with coaching changes, the Mount Alison Mounties are also welcoming a new face to their staff. The team has hired Zac Colangelo, the former recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach for the York Lions, full-time for the upcoming season.

“I am pleased to announce the hiring of Coach Colangelo for the 2018 season,” Head Coach Pete Fraser said. “He will bring great energy and knowledge to our group of defensive backs. Zac is a very good recruiter and will be key in attracting athletes from the GTA, an important area for our program. I am very happy to be adding a good, young coach to our staff and a very good person.”

Colangelo was apart of the Lions staff since 2014 where he held numerous roles, although he was primarily the recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach. During his time with the Lions, he was a coach for Team Ontario and a guest defensive backs coach at the East-West Bowl. He also became the defensive coordinator for the York Region Lions in the Ontario Varsity Football League. His presence helped the team to their first-ever playoff berth. Last summer, the team made the playoffs again and finished as a championship finalist.

Before his time with the York Region Lions, Colangelo spent three years as the defensive coordinator for the Loyola Hawks in autumn and the Halton Cowboys in the summer. Having been a member of both organizations himself, Colangelo also played as a linebacker with the Saint Mary’s University Huskies.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
