MTA welcomes RICC Knights DB to team

Mounties bring in New Brunswick commit to their Class of 2017.

Keegan Watters, a defensive back from Royal Imperial Collegiate of Canada, has made a little bit of history with his signing with the Mount Allison Mounties.

“I’m the first university football player from the hometown ever,” Watters said, who hails from Sussex, New Brunswick, a small community on the New Brunswick Route 1. It has a population size of just under 4,500 people.

It can be tough in such a tiny place to make a name for yourself. That’s why, in grade 12, Watters moved to St. Catharines, Ontario, to play with the Royal Imperial Knights, a football prep school. He spent three years prior to that playing on the varsity Sussex Regional Sonics in the New Brunswick High School Football League.

Standing at 6’1, 190lbs, Watters drew the eyes of the Mounties coaching staff. It helped their cause that Watters had a soft-spot for the school. “I’ve always wanted to go to Mount Allison since I’m from New Brunswick,” the 2010 Sonics MVP said. “When I visited the school, I fell in love.”

The future Biology student will surely feel home among the small campus. He even fits in with the coaches’ schemes. “The defensive approach is unique and its my capabilities,” Watters said. “Head Coach Scott Brady is an amazing coach.”

Watters’s history making doesn’t start with him reaching the U Sports level. He was also a member of the first Team New Brunswick squad that captured their first win at the Football Canada Cup.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
