The University of Regina Rams improved to 4-1 on the season after defeating Alberta by a score of 40-8 on Saturday night in a Canada West game at Mosaic Stadium.
The Rams dominated the scoresheet, racking up 497 yards of total offence and holding Alberta to just 228.
Marc Mueller completed 20 of his 31 passes for Regina, ending up with 274 yards in the air and two touchdown passes. The fourth-year quarterback was also a threat on the ground, running for a 24-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 35-yard major early in the fourth as he recorded 75 rushing yards on just four attempts.
Adrian Charles had his fourth consecutive game with at least 100 rushing yards, ending up with 104 yards and his conference-leading seventh touchdown run of the season.
Eight different Rams ended up with receptions during the win, including touchdown catches by both Chris King and Brenden Owens. Mark McConkey had a game-high five catches for 44 yards.
Bruce Anderson led the Rams with seven total tackles and also forced a fumble and added a pass breakup. Jamir Walker recorded his Canada West-leading fourth interception of the season, and Chris Sciog added 5.5 tackles.
Alberta’s lone bright spot came on a 98-yard Randon Ralph kickoff return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The Golden Bears’ only other points came on a conceded safety in the third. Defensive back Chris Muchena had a game-high eight solo tackles for Alberta.
The Rams opened up the scoring on a touchdown pass from Mueller to Brenden Owens on the team’s second possession of the game. Chris Bodnar added a single on the kickoff, then hit a 23-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter after a wild series of circumstances – including an Alberta touchdown called back due to a hold – caused the Rams to line up for the short field goal three times.
Regina got touchdown runs from Charles and Mueller in the second quarter to go into the half up 25-0.
The two teams combined for only three points in the third quarter, and the 35-yard scamper four minutes into the fourth quarter by Mueller essentially sealed the victory for the Rams.
The Rams remain tied for first place in the conference with Calgary and will return to action on Oct. 16 at Manitoba following the bye week. Alberta (2-2) will host UBC (1-4) in Edmonton on Oct. 16.
