Myles Gibbons set to take charge of Lions offence

TORONTO, August 22 – There will be a new pivot under centre for the York University Lions football team this season, but Myles Gibbon is no stranger to varsity football.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound quarterback from Burlington, Ont., joined the Lions this summer and stepped on the training camp field for the first time on Tuesday. A talented player out of Rosemere High School, he spent the last three seasons as the quarterback at the University of South Alabama in the NCAA.

He graduated from South Alabama in 2012 with a degree in psychology and has been accepted into York’s School of Kinesiology & Health Science as a master’s student, where he will continue his studies in sport psychology.

Gibbon brings immediate improvement to the most important position in the game, and seeing him taking snaps with the first team was a welcome sight for the coaching staff.

β€œI can’t put into words how happy we are that Myles is here,” said head coach Warren Craney. β€œHe’s a proven winner with tremendous leadership, physical ability and football aptitude. We already have several talented young players at our skilled positions and on our lines, and now that we have a top-level quarterback, I believe we are ready to compete against the rest of the teams in the OUA.”

At South Alabama, Gibbon was the Jaguars’ first ever starting quarterback in 2009, when the squad joined NCAA football for the first time. He started six of the team’s seven games that year and played in seven games in 2010. For his career, he threw for 865 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 267 yards and three scores, for a total offence of 1,132 yards.

Prior to playing for the Jags, he was a quarterback at Vanier College in Montreal, where he guided the Cheetahs to the Bol D’Or title in each of his first two years. He was selected as the league’s most valuable player and to its all-star team in his third season, when he was also voted the Bol D’Or championship MVP. Gibbon set the school record for most touchdowns in a season, scoring 25 in just eight games in 2007.

β€œAfter leaving South Alabama I really wanted to make sure I came to a school with a solid coaching staff,” said Gibbon. β€œWith an offensive coordinator in Michael Faulds and a head coach in Warren Craney, I believe choosing York is the right decision for me. In terms of this season, I’m expecting to surprise a lot of people. I think a lot of people consider us to be an underdog, but I think we have the ability to come out and challenge the league.”

Gibbon will make his debut for the Lions on Labour Day Monday (Sept. 3) against the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston, Ont.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
