The Crestwood Mustangs (Peterborough) faced the Sydenham Golden Eagles in what turned out to be an entertaining finish to a hard fought match.
In a classic tug of war match, the Mustangs prevailed on a 34 yard Ben Nanni overtime field goal to defeat the Golden Eagles 16 to 13.
Sydenham tied the game with 48 seconds left in regulation, to the joy of a very loud Golden Eagle cheering section. The game ended tied at 13 and off to overtime we went.
The Golden Eagles were the first to scrimmage in the over time period.
NOTE: Overtime in Canadian Football is structured in the following manor. Both teams get to scrimmage the ball at the opposition 35 yard line and attempt to score. The overtime period will end when one team scores more points then the other team.
Carrying the momentum of the 4th quarter with them, the Golden Eagles marched down the field and were faced with a 3rd and goal from the two yard line. Instead of going for a field goal (both teams had great kickers) the Golden Eagles brought in the short yardage ‘jumbo’ offense but was nullified by the Mustang defense.
The Mustangs then scrimmaged the ball from the 35 yard line and after two short Mackenzie Clarkson runs, the Mustangs set up for a 34 yard field goal attempt, which Ben Nanni booted between the uprights for the National Capital Bowl victory.
This was the first victory for the Mustangs since they won they championship in 2004.
