The first day of the National Flag championship (U18, U16) in Halifax, Nova Scotia is in the books. Teams from coast-to-coast are participating in this national championship which concludes on Monday.
Standings are below from day 1 and a game summary of the Team Ontario boys U16 and U18 team:

Burlington represents Ontario at National Flag tourney:
The U16’s wasted no time in executing their game plan in game one outscoring Nova Scotia by 36 to 6. Hunter Martin and Evan Thomspon contributed three touchdowns each who also got two and three interceptions respectively. Ben Kukhta made 3 long catches to secure 1st downs. Conor O’Brien made a big catch for first down and added a sack for good measure. Ryan Grilli caused havok on the defense with many blocked passed and one sack. Jack Stillie made a crucial interception and threw a 33 yard bomb for TD while Matt Gima completed 16 passes and controlled the ball well.
The U18’s started the tournament off against last years champion in a very strong team from Manitoba. After falling behind by two touchdowns the boys got their composure and worked their way back into the game with strong zone coverage play on Defense. Eventually tying the game 18 to 18 they came within one catch on the last drive of the game from winning. Ryan Grilli, Sam Stillie, and Scott Carnegie each contributed a TD with Scott and Brad Johns setting up two TD’s with two crucial interceptions. Ryan Thompson also got a nifty interception deep in our end to stop a big drive by Manitoba in the second half with a few minutes to play. Dan Higgins and Mitchell Garvey played stingy defense with some great flag pulling. Richard Froggat figured out the holes in Manitoba’s man to man coverage by the second half and managed the clock very well in the last two minutes of the game to shut down Manitoba’s chance to pull out win. Expect to see these two teams playing each other again in the playoffs.
