Team USA Roundup: Shipley, Turner score big for Texas
Two University of Texas true freshmen with Team USA ties scored touchdowns Saturday in the Longhorns’ 37-14 win over Iowa State.
Jaxon Shipley, a member of the 2011 U.S. Under-19 National Team, led No. 17 Texas with six receptions for 141 yards, including a 40-yard TD catch that put the Longhorns up, 34-0, just before halftime. He also hauled in a 49-yard pass in that game.
For the season, Shipley has a team-best 16 catches for 280 yards (17.5 average) and two TDs.
Josh Turner (2011) also found paydirt after picking up a blocked punt in the second quarter and returning it 34 yards for a touchdown. Turner (No. 25 in photo) added two tackles against the Cyclones, the first multiple-tackle game of his college career.
β€œI saw that the ball got tipped, so I just grabbed it and went,” Turner told media afterward. β€œI was thinking, β€˜I’m about to score.’ It was a momentum shift, and it helped us a lot.”
Another member of the 2011 Team USA, Joe Bergeron ran four times for 28 yards, including a long of 16 yards.
MATHIEU SETS LSU RECORD
Tyrann Mathieu (2010) continues to provide weekly highlight footage for No. 1 LSU.
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound sophomore cornerback had a sack, strip, scoop and score for the Tigers on Saturday during a 35-7 win over Kentucky. He later added another forced fumble as part of his four-tackle day, giving him nine in his college career (16 games), an LSU record.
β€œ(On the touchdown), we had a strongside blitz called, it’s up to me to get up to the line of scrimmage, heckling the quarterback,” Mathieu said. β€œIt’s about me getting my hands on the ball.”
